The lavish magazine sought to emulate the production values of Fortune magazine -- indeed, it went a bit farther, with a hardcover binding -- but after three issues, all in 1937, it ceased to exist. Whatever the exigencies that worked against it, this issue has a class and pizazz that distinguishes it from the vast amount of movie hype and promotional literature being sold to the public then. (Note we aren't including studio annuals which also could be extravaganzas, but these were meant for exhibitors and those in the industry.) Folio, 36 by 28.5 cm. 90 pp. There are big spreads on the most prominent releases at the time: "A Star is Born", "Captain's Courageous", "The Prince and the Pauper", "lost Horizon" -- all movies that have a claim as classics today. Article includes one on the casting of the movie version of the recently published runaway bestseller by a certain Margaret Mitchell. The article pitches Miriam Hopkins against Tallulah Bankhead in the competition to play Scarlett -- they were the glaringly obvious possibilities since both hailed from the South, Hopkins, from Georgia, Bankhead, from Alabama. The writer seeded the Rhett competition with better foresight when he narrowed it to a duel between Clark Gable and Fredric March. The big movie of the year was "A Star is Born", which thus pops up not just in an article but also the advertisements. The magazine manages to feature in the most flattering way all the stars of the day, down to supporting players, character actors, etc., but it doesn't neglect other contributors to the movies, such as directors. One puff piece is entitled "Four Aces", with the Aces CB DeMille, Frank Capra, Clarence Brown and Mervyn LeRoy. Articles on the lifestyles of the stars, outside their day job, plays into the glamour that the studios worked so hard to create and nurture, whether real or illusory. An article, "Sunday Night at Marion Davies", centering on her Beach House built on the beach in Santa Monaco, glosses over a fabulousness that would be nearly impossible to outdo. We would note that the photos taken for the piece were much reproduced later -- no biography or article on Davies even now would not carry some of them. More serious toned fare covers the literary and artistic trends, such as the gravitation towards satire in film. But given the large format of an industry that is entirely about appearances, fashion, make-up and beauty receive their due, with articles directly about them, not to mention the many ads. Of the many contributors to the publication one who brought a celebrity lustre to the enterprise was the legendary Scottish American opera singer, Mary Garden, who had recently retired from the opera stage.
