Paperback. Condition: new. Paperback. Berdan's United States Sharpshooters were the Union army's elite marksmen-hand-picked riflemen armed with cutting-edge Sharps rifles and trained to kill at long range. From the Peninsula Campaign through Chancellorsville, Gettysburg, the Wilderness, Petersburg, and Appomattox, these specialists hunted enemy officers, gunners, and scouts, often fighting in open order far in front of the main Union lines.Written by Capt. C.A. Stevens, a veteran of the corps, this classic firsthand history follows the 1st and 2nd U.S. Sharpshooters from their creation in 1861 to their mustering out in 1865. Readers get vivid, ground-level accounts of recruiting and marksmanship trials, fieldcraft, sniping tactics, skirmish line work, and the hard realities of life and death in an elite volunteer unit.Inside you'll find: Detailed descriptions of the Sharps rifle and other specialist weapons, and how the men used them in real combat situations.Battle-by-battle narratives at places like Yorktown, Fredericksburg, Chancellorsville, Gettysburg, Mine Run, the Wilderness, Spotsylvania, and Petersburg.Stories of legendary figures such as Hiram Berdan and 14-year-old sharpshooter Charles N. Race, along with dozens of lesser-known soldiers whose letters and memories preserve the unit's culture and camaraderie.Rare insights into scouting, skirmishing, and "special operations" on Civil War battlefields-ambushes, counter-sniper work, and small-unit actions.Perfect for readers who love American Civil War history, military weaponry, and regimental studies, Berdan's United States Sharpshooters in the Army of the Potomac offers an essential look at the Union's most feared specialist infantry. Whether you're interested in tactics and firearms, Gettysburg and the Eastern Theater, or the origins of modern special forces, this is one of the foundational eyewitness accounts you'll return to again and again.
