Hirsch, Jr., che documenta lo sfacelo della scuola americana e lo spiega con il potere che vi esercita la pedagogia progressista. Sensibile al naturalismo romantico e a una concezione formalistica delle abilità, questa pedagogia soggiace ai tabù rousseauiani sulla scrittura e sulla trasmissione delle conoscenze teoriche, impedisce dunque alla scuola di insegnarle in modo diretto e la riduce a un ambiente di apprendimento, nel quale gli alunni acquisirebbero le abilità formali per evoluzione interna risvegliata dalle attività spontanee. Di fatto essi sono abbandonati all'ignoranza. Poiché la mancanza di istruzione colpisce con più forza i figli delle famiglie svantaggiate, la scuola che rinuncia alla conoscenza per il timore ugualitario di differenziare gli alunni, non solo, come capì Gramsci, esaspera il divario di classe, ma fa mancare la cultura comune necessaria alla mediazione dei contrasti politici, così che la società perde la capacità di dialogo e si disgrega.
