Soft cover. Condition: Good. Some light shelf wear and a crossed out name. Swamp Fever is the fascinating tale of one man's life as an alternative lifestyler in Golden Bay, northwest of Nelson. As a nineteen-year-old, Gerard Hindmarsh quit his public servant job as a cartographic cadet for the Department of Lands and Survey and bought a block of scrub-covered, swampy land at Tukurua near Collingwood. Gerard was part of the homesteading movement of the 1970s, embracing the hippy ideals of getting back to the land to live a more self-sufficient and sustainable lifestyle. Much of his land was swamp, initially ear-marked for draining, but, after fortuitously discovering its vibrant ecology, Gerard fell in love with not only his swamp, but swamps in general. His wetland, with its birds, fish, and plants, becomes a metaphor throughout the book of Gerard's growing connection with the land, and he compares the diverse and thriving community in his swamp with the changing community in Golden Bay. Here the conservative farming establishment was forced to face and accept change in the community as alternative lifestylers, whose values were at odds with their own, made a big impact on their comfortable existence. Swamp Fever is the memoir of not just one man, but of a time in New Zealand's recent history not yet well-documented. It captures a changing society at a time when conventional attitudes towards land and nature, community and family, personal relationships and authority were being challenged. Gerard Hindmarsh is a natural storyteller and he has written a book that is not only insightful and revealing, but hugely entertaining.

Soft cover. Condition: Very Good. A good clean copy with some minor dulling to the cover. The area of wilderness in the top northwest corner of the South Island, stretching west from Nelson in an endless maze of forested mountains and valleys to the rugged and wild West Coast, running out from Golden Bay down to Karamea. This area has an astonishing ecological complexity, so it is perhaps not surprising that this landscape has also generated a wonderfully rich and colourful human history. For well over 20 years Golden Bay author Gerard Hindmarsh has been collecting stories from Kahurangi and in this book he has woven the best of them into a fascinating blend of natural and social history. In Kahurangi Calling he describes many of the ecological treasures that are found in Kahurangi, but also tells the stories about the fascinating characters that have travelled and lived here: explorers, miners, graziers, trampers and other adventurers, eelers, hermits and many others. This is a highly readable and engaging book about a remarkable corner of New Zealand. Anyone with a love of our backcountry and the colourful people that are drawn to these places will treasure this book.

Soft cover. Condition: Good. 1st Edition. Outsiders Stories From the Fringe of New Zealand Society By Gerard Hindmarsh. VERY SCARCE. THIS TITLE IS NOW OUT OF PRINT Publisher Potton & Burton, 2012, FIRST EDITION. Good softback, some creasing, tanning and marks, name to ffep. Gerard Hindmarsh argues that New Zealand is lucky to have had, and still have, its fair share of people who choose to live out on the fringes of society. He believes these 'outsiders', in their love of a free and unhindered life, offer an important counterbalance to the highpressured, commercialised and urban world that most of us inhabit. It is these outsiders who are the subject of this book, a wonderfully diverse group of people who, both historically and in the present day, found room beyond the cities and towns to live their lives in their own individual way. The characters who fill these pages range from a hermit who spent 47 years on his own island in the Marlborough Sounds; a farmer from probably the most remote farm in New Zealand on the west coast of Stewart Island; an eccentric mountain dweller waiting for the world to end in Kahurangi National Park; the now well-known Robert Long, or 'Beansprout', from Gorge River in South Westland; a fisherman who jumped ship in Fiordland National Park; and many more. Gerard Hindmarsh has a great eye for a story, and in Outsiders he presents a highly readable and colourful social history, which speaks strongly about a rich vein of New Zealand identity. ALL PHOTOS ARE OF THE ACTUAL BOOK. All books are sent with free courier postage within New Zealand.
