Hardcover. Condition: Very Good. 1st Edition. Young Folks' Treasury, Volume VIII: Wonders of Science and Invention. Edited by Daniel Edwin Wheeler; assistant editor Herbert T. Wade; series edited by Hamilton Wright Mabie and Edward Everett Hale. New York: The University Society, Inc., 1909. Large 8vo, richly illustrated with col…or plates (including protected frontispiece), halftones, and diagrams. Original publisher's decorative brown cloth with gilt-and-black stamped pictorial panels to spine and front board; illustrated Art Nouveau endpapers. Volume VIII of this celebrated 12 volume educational set surveys the scientific and technological revolutions of the late 19th and early 20th centuries. Includes sections on primitive and modern locomotion, the motor vehicle, the flying machine, the gyroscope, wireless telephone and telegraphy, early telephone science, sound transmission, and additional essays by Alfred Russel Wallace, Ray Stannard Baker, Elisha Gray, and Herbert T. Wade. Illustrations include color plates (tissue-guarded), photographs of inventors such as Thomas Edison, and diagrams of emerging technologies. Edition/Printing: Copyright page dated 1909 with no later printings stated, consistent with the earliest issue of the original 1909 Young Folks' Treasury set. The publisher did not differentiate printings, but binding, typography, and plate quality all indicate an early (likely first year) printing. Daniel Edwin Wheeler served as editor for this volume, specializing in science and early technology for lay and youth audiences. Herbert T. Wade, assistant editor and scientific writer, contributed extensively on topics related to physics, communication technology, and mechanical invention.

Hardcover. Condition: Very Good. 1st Edition. Printed in Great Britain. Preface, Copious Notes and Bibliographical References, Tables, Charts, Index; xi, 304 pages. The sturdy blue cloth shows slight rubbing at the extremities, with lettering faded on the spine; the binding is strong and the interior bright, crisp, and clean. Th…ere is normal pale toning to the endpapers; a bit more on the top-edge of the text-block; several leaves remain unopened. [See multiple images of the actual book.] From the Preface: "In the following pages it has been the aim of the authors to present in simple and non-technical language, so far as possible, a comprehensive view of the evolution of the science of metrology as it is now understood, [there being] apparently a distinct lack of works which in small compass discuss the subject comprehensively from its many points of view." As with every book from my father's collection, tipped in at the front is the small, attractive, acid-free bookplate pictured on my homepage. All books are wrapped with special care and are shipped promptly---domestic sales sent with 'delivery confirmation' tracking; international sales sent via global priority, also with tracking.
