Paperback. Condition: New. Print on Demand. This book of discourses on art comprises a series of lectures delivered to the students of the Royal Academy of Arts in London. The author, a prominent painter and a founding member of the academy, discusses the principles and practices of art. His main focus is on painting and sculptu…re, but his insights extend to other art forms as well. The author emphasizes the importance of studying the works of the great masters and learning from their techniques. He argues that artists should strive to create works that are not merely imitations of nature, but that express their own unique vision and creativity. He also discusses the importance of composition, color, and light in creating effective works of art. The author's insights are based on his own extensive experience as a painter and teacher. His writing is clear and concise, and his ideas are well-supported by examples from art history. This book is an essential read for anyone interested in learning more about the principles and practices of art. This book is a reproduction of an important historical work, digitally reconstructed using state-of-the-art technology to preserve the original format. In rare cases, an imperfection in the original, such as a blemish or missing page, may be replicated in the book. print-on-demand item.

Hardcover. Condition: Very Good. 1st Edition. xxiv+572+xliii+[v ad] pages with folding map, 8 plans, 13 aquatint plates (1 folding and 2 hand-colored) and errata slip. Quarto (11 1/2" x 8 1/2") bound in contemporary diced calf with gilt lettering to spine. (Abbey Travel 305; Dawson, pp. 111-115) First edition. Frederick William…Beechey was a naval officer, artist, explorer, hydrographer, and author. In 1818 the British navy renewed attempts to discover a northwest passage to the Pacific, suspended since the discoveries of James Cook. In January of that year Beechey was appointed as second in command and chief draftsman to the brig Trent, commanded by Lieutenant John Franklin. With the barque Dorothea, the Trent formed an expedition under Captain David Buchan with orders from the Admiralty to search for a passage by a northern course across the Pole. Leaving the Thames on 25 April, the Trent and the Dorothea sailed northwest of Spitsbergen as far as 80°34´N where they became jammed in the ice. After three weeks the two crews finally succeeded in freeing the vessels, and the expedition headed west towards Greenland. Unfortunately heavy gales forced the ships hard against the ice, seriously damaging the Dorothea; despite repairs, the expedition finally had to be abandoned. Both ships reached Deptford on the Thames safely on 22 October. Beechey later prepared a narrative of this expedition, A voyage of discovery towards the North Pole (1843), in which six reproductions of sketches he had done while in the Arctic were printed. Because of his experience and demonstrated skills in navigation and sketching, Beechey was attached during the years 1821 and 1822 to a survey of the coast of northern Africa, an account of which he later published with his brother Henry William, a civilian member of the expedition. On 25 Jan. 1822, while on this survey, Beechey was promoted to the rank of commander. In 1821, under Captain William Henry Smith he sailed in the Adventure sloop, Henry W. Beechey, in conducting overland a survey of the North Coast of Africa, he set out from Tripoli for that purpose. The results of his researches, which extended as far eastward as Derna, and lasted until 25 July, 1822, are fully detailed by Beechey and his brother in Proceedings of the Expedition to explore the Northern Coast of Africa from Tripoli eastward, in 1321-2; a comprehending an account of the Greater Syrtis and Cyrenaica, and of the ancient Cities composing the Pentapolis. The primary naval objective was to accurately map the coastline stretching eastward from Tripoli, with a specific emphasis on the notoriously dangerous and poorly understood waters of the Greater Syrtis (Gulf of Sidra). The Beechey brothers extensively documented the grand ruins of Cyrenaica and the ancient Greco-Roman cities of the Pentapolis (including Cyrene, Apollonia, Ptolemais, Tauchira, and Berenice). The text acts as a comprehensive reference piece, rich with early 19th-century scientific data regarding the region's unique flora, fauna, and geological formations. Sociopolitical Insights: The authors record their diplomatic interactions with the Bashaw of Tripoli and local tribal authorities, offering a rare glimpse into the contemporary culture and geopolitical climate of Ottoman-era Libya. Condition: Some spotting and light offsetting, contemporary diced calf gilt, rebacked, some light edge wear else very good.

1st Edition. 8vo, 21cm, The First Edition, 12p., plus folding view, page 12 chipped half way across at the top margin with 6 lines affected, disbound, otherwise very good to fine, the folding plate is fine, disbound, rare. Rare polar-themed ephemera relating to Barker's panorama in Leicester Square. This was a popular attraction…, visited even by John Keats who was left tongue-tied. He wrote to his brother the month of its opening, "I have been very much pleased with the Panorama of the ships at the North Pole with the icebergs, the Mountains, the Bears, the Walrus the seals the Penguins and a large whale floating back above the water it is impossible to describe the place" (Letters 1814-1821, p. 95). The illustration in question was a double-decker panorama which was the first floor. On the second floor was the view of Petersburg depicted in the accompanying print. These plate illustrations could be purchased separately from the guide. There was another issue of the guide in 1820.

No Binding. Condition: Very Good. The preferred large-paper Admiralty issue of Beechey's famous account, including a description of California. This narrative offers an extensive account of exploration of the Pacific Northwest coast from Alaska to California, including important descriptions of Alaskan Eskimos, Monterey, San Fra…ncisco and several Pacific islands, including Hawaii. In 1825, Frederick William Beechey was given command of HMS Blossom, assigned to sail around Cape Horn to the Bering Strait, where he was to provide support for two expeditions seeking the Northwest Passage one under the command of William Parry and the other under the command of John Franklin. Neither Parry nor Franklin completed their journey. Franklin s journey got trapped near Beechey Island, which Beechey himself had named for his father, when serving as a Lieutenant under William Parry, in Parry s 1819 voyage through the Parry Strait. In his journey, Beechey explored the west coast of North America extensively, as well as many Pacific Islands. His travelogue discussed his voyages in detail. It includes descriptions of California, including visits to Monterey and two visits to San Francisco, at that time a Mexican possession with two main establishments, the Mission San Francisco de Asis (Mission Dolores), and the Presidio fort near the tip of the peninsula. (The settlement of Yerba Buena, which would become the downtown of today s San Francisco, would not be established until 1835.) His travelogue also includes descriptions of the Eskimos he met, as well as his visits to the Tuamotu Archipelago, the Society Islands and Tahiti, Alaska, Hawaii, Macao, Okinawa, and to Pitcairn Island, where he met the last survivor of the mutiny on the HMS Bounty, John Adams, who told Beechey his story, which Beechey recorded. Provenance: High Latitude, Bainbridge Island; Martin Greene Library (Christie s Dec. 2017).
