Add to basketCloth. Condition: Very Good Indeed. A uncommon and handsomely illustrated work by Arthur Kay, showcasing his lifelong passion for the arts. With a introduction by Henry M. Hake, the former Director of the National Portrait Gallery in London. With two appreciations to the front of the volume by Sir. John Martin-Harvey and Sir. D.… Y. Cameron, discussing Arthur Kay, his love of art, and influence within the artist community of Scotland. Of Kay, Cameron notes, 'To him Art expressed itself in many tongues, and he had the eye and ear and heart to follow them in a solo or in chorus.' This volume is an extension of Arthur Kay's life long love for art, and his desire to share this passion. Illustrated throughout, the work not only showcases the various artists talents, but Kay's eye for painting, sculpture and design. Profusely illustrated with black and white plates throughout. Collated, complete. In a handsome decorative cloth binding. Externally, generally smart. Bumping to the head and tail of the spine, with small tears to the cloth. Light bumping to the extremities. Light sunning to the head of the front board. The odd mark and spot to the front and rear boards. Evidence of tape removal to the front and rear endpapers. Pen inscription to the tail of the front endpaper, reads 'Deichmann, 1974'. Light offsetting to the front and rear endpapers. Internally, firmly bound. Pages are clean with the odd spot throughout. Very Good Indeed. Various (illustrator). book.

Add to basket1p, 4to. On discoloured and somewhat grubby paper, folded twice for postage. Addressed to 'S. Hodgson Esq.' and signed 'H M. Hake'. Hodgson has sent Hake 'a manuscript fragment', which does not seem to indicate either of 'the portraits in the Gallery'. He has 'looked up the record of portraits offered in the past but there is no… mention of Mrs. Cruikshank or her executors.' He asks a related question before turning to the subject of the physician Sir Benjamin Ward Richardson (1828-1896), who was in Hake's opinion 'more of a professional worthy than a national one'. Despite his opinion, Hake 'would not discourage his portrait being offered if it were not too large a portrait'. He is retaining the slip ('manuscript fragment') in case anything further occurs to him. 'S. Hodgson' donated a carte-de-visite and a cabinet card to the NPG in 1961.
