Hardcover. Condition: Fair. THERE ARE NO TARIFFS OR CUSTOMS DUTIES ON BOOKS. In his Preface, the Editor, Andrew Lang, explains the origins of the various stories in this collection, with attributions where the authors are known - many of them people he possible knew personally. The Preface ends with "All the rest are by Mrs Lang" - perhaps because she had not been recognised for her contributions to his 'Fairy Book' series. Andrew Lang FBA (1844â?"1912) was a Scottish poet, novelist, literary critic, and contributor to the field of anthropology. He is best known as a collector of folk and fairy tales. The Andrew Lang lectures at the University of St Andrews are named after him.Henry Justice Ford (1860â?"1941) was a prolific English artist and illustrator, active from 1886 through to the late 1920s. He came to public attention when he provided the illustrations for Andrew Lang's 'Fairy Books', sold worldwide in the 1880s and 1890s. Our book is in only fair condition, its age and probably use having had a detrimental effect on the exterior in particular. Bound in blue cloth with gilt illustration of a roaring lion on the front, and of a dancing bear on the spine (this and the gilt title etc somewhat faded), it is generally ageworn, and the spine cover is almost detached. Corners are bumped with a little damage, edges & angles rubbed, and top & tail of the spine are both very softened and worn. All page edges are gilt, and remain quite bright. Inside, both endpapers are intact, and the binding generally firm, with no loose pages; pages are somewhat mottled with pale brown, but many are clean and bright. Mr Ford's lovely illustrations enhance the whole. Ink gift inscription on page between fep and halftitle.
