      FIRST EDITION FIRST ISSUE (1896), 12mo, 150 x 120 mm, 6 x 4½ inches, cloth backed colour illustrated green boards, top edges gilt, pages: 60 + (2), song titles printed in red. Colour illustrated frontispiece, title page vignette and 12 very sweet colour plates of babies and young children (printed by Edmund Evans). Corners just very slightly worn, no inscriptions. Near Fine excellent copy. The first issue has gilt top edges and does not mention the US publisher L.C. Page on the cover or title page. Measuring 250 x 195mm and illustrated beautifully throughout. Some soiling to spines andand boards; shelfwear and bumping to extremities with some splitting to the cloth at joints. Gift inscriptions from 1893 and 1949 to front pastedown of volume I and ownership signatures to pastedown of volume II. Offsetting and foxing to preliminary and terminal leaves, else fresh. A compilation of some of Hans Christian Andersen's most beloved fairy tales, including The Little Mermaid, The Emperor's New Suit, Thumbelina, and The Princess and the Pea.
