It gives the reader an in-depth, systematic introduction to the concepts and formulas of fracture mechanics, showing how to apply these concepts to practical situations. Important parameters relating to cracking and failure are introduced through a deductive process in Chapter 2, deriving relevant field properties in cracked bodies using simple concepts of elasticity and plasticity. Energy balance and hypotheses for cracking are discussed in Chapters 3 and 4, focusing on criteria of cracking and the means to predict the continued slow growth of a crack. Chapter 5 examines the concepts of dynamics that relate to catastrophic failures, reviewing important wave properties and field concepts involved in fast cracking of brittle bodies.
