Als bekennender Jude und Sozialist räucherte er den wilhelminischen Kunstgeist aus un…d gab der demokratischen Epoche ein vollkommen neuartiges künstlerisches Gesicht. Für diese Tat hassten ihn Konservative mehr als manchen Staatsmann. Bereits in Jessners Hamburger und Königsberger Zeit entwickelte er seinen raumgliedernden und sachlich-knappen Regiestil, der am Staatstheater in Berlin eine Revolution auslöste. Er entriss den Stücken die als wesentlich erkannte Idee und beleuchtete die Figuren aus der aktuellen politischen Perspektive. Jessner griff, noch vor Piscator oder Brecht, unmittelbar in den Tageskampf der Republik ein. Die Geburt des Interpretationstheaters beeinflusst das deutsche Theater bis heute. Über Jessners Schüler Fritz Kortner führte der Weg zu den Aussage-Regisseuren unserer Zeit (Zadek, Neuenfels, Grüber). Jessner verkörperte außerdem den Typus des Außenseiters, der in den zwanziger Jahren abrupt ins Zentrum des revolutionären Geschehens rückte. Auf dem Rücken des Intendanten wurde die Spaltung der politischen Kräfte Weimars ausgetragen. Sein Rücktritt 1930 war ein Muster für die Ausgrenzung der Juden aus dem deutschen Kulturbereich. Jessner hat Grundlagen für das Theater des 20. Jahrhunderts geschaffen. Mit ihm nimmt die Geschichte des modernen Regietheaters ihren Anfang.; Dissertationsschrift.
