Condition: According to Gosse's. Edinburgh: William Oliphant, 1823. According to Gosse's "Pirates Who's Who" Peter Heaman, who was a mate on the schooner Jane, and Francois Gautier, who was cook, killed the captain and a crewmen, and imprisoned the rest of the crew in the forecastle. At the time, the ship was off the coast of Brazil carrying, among other goods, "eight barrels of Spanish dollars." They eventually obtained the loyalty of the crew and sailed for Scotland, where they were arrested by Customs officers after a cabin boy squealed on them. Heaman and Gautiez "were tried for piracy and murder, and. were both hanged. on the sands of Leith." See Gosse p. 157-8. This is a stated "Second Edition." It is the rarest account of a trial that was well-known in its day. Worldcat shows only the National Library of Scotland holding a copy (though it is mis-cataloged as "8vo.") No copies are currently offered for sale online, and no copies have appeared at auction. The presumed first edition, with a slightly different title, and two fewer pages, was published in 1822. Worldcat shows two libraries holding copies of that first edition. This copy is bound in worn 19th century calf over marbled boards, with old stab holes in gutter, suggesting it began its career as a pamphlet in soft covers.
