Hardcover. Condition: As New. Dust Jacket Condition: As New. Facsimile Edition. Facsimile of the text and plates of the Fifth Edition published by Henry G. Bohn in 1852. 8vo. Original green boards lettered in gold gilt on spine; laminated pictorial DJ, 359pp incl Appendix. 'Captain (later Sir) William Cornwallis Harris was an En…glishman with a passion for the hunting of big game. "From my boyhood upwards," he says, "I have been taxed by the facetious with 'shooting madness', and truly a most delightful mania I have ever found it." An officer in the East India Company's corps of engineers, he was granted two years' leave on medical grounds, and decided to exploit this opportunity to indulge his interest in the wild game of Africa. He arrived at the Cape in 1836 and spent two years travelling in South Africa, from Port Elizabeth to as far north as the Limpopo River - described in his book as "a hunting expedition from the Cape of Good Hope through the territories of the Chief Moselekatse to the Tropic of Capricorn". But Harris was not just a hunter: he was a careful observer of the social and political situation in which he found himself - a situation of special interest because his visit coincided with the early days of the Great Trek, and he made detailed observations about the conditions of the Trekkers, and of their initial conflicts with indigenous people.' AS New, no marks! Gift Quality. All our books are triple wrapped or boxed, never shipped "naked" in a mylar bag.

Hardcover. Condition: Near Fine. 3rd Edition. Large Octavo. xvi, 359pp. 26 coloured lithographic plates. Folding map and appendix section at rear. Full brown calf, decorated in gilt and blind to covers. Spine profusely gilt-decorated with four raised bands, titling in gilt. Upper edge gilt. Marbled endpapers. Coloured plates thr…oughout. Folding map and appendix to rear. Third edition. William Cornwallis Harris was a military engineer in the service of the East India Company when, in 1836, his health compelled him to take leave and seek the restorative air of the Cape Colony. What followed was one of the great sporting and natural history expeditions of the nineteenth century. Harris and a small party pushed north from the Cape into territories then entirely unknown to European science; through the lands of the Matabele chief Moselekatse, across the Limpopo, to the Tropic of Capricorn. What Harris encountered during this expedition transformed his understanding of what Africa was. He encountered wildlife of a scale and variety that defied all prior European conception: vast herds of elephant, giraffe, zebra, wildebeest, and sable antelope moving across plains of extraordinary beauty. He was among the first Europeans to observe and describe the sable antelope, which was subsequently named Hippotragus niger harrisi in his honour. This third edition of his work is the complete edition - the first edition to contain the complete suite of colour-illustrated plates he created during the trip. Near fine. Some mild markings and rubbing to covers. Gilt bright and bold throughout. Contents near fine with a hint of toning here and there; otherwise clear, bright, and well preserved. Coloured plates remain vivid and colourful. Folding map present. Author (illustrator).

Hardcover. Condition: Good. xvi, 359 p., interspersed with plates. 25 cm. Colour frontispiece and title vignette. 24 other coloured lithographic plates and fold-out map with route traced in colour. Rebound in half burgundy leather with original marbled paper boards. New endpapers. Boards rubbed. Edges worn. Occasional foxing to…plates and guards. Small tears in top margins of pp. 263-270. Ink inscription on an endpaper states prize for H. B. Carter Dec. 19, 1848. Bookplate for I. M. Bonham-Carter of 5th Fusiliers in 1925. One of the essential 19th-century works on African game, Harris' narrative goes far beyond big-game hunting and is an invaluable portrayal of southern Africa in mid-19th century. His work is regarded as the first and cornerstone work concerning the hunt of game animals in Africa - in other words, the first published African Safari. In many cases the illustrations were among the earliest glimpses Western peoples experienced of fascinating African animals. However, the author and his entourage travelled by wagon and oxen through the realms of the Matabele king and the Barolong country, so that he was able to describe African peoples as well. He gives interesting accounts of the Matabele people and experiences with the Bushmen, Hottentots and other tribes. His description of his stay with King Moseletatse is of great historical value. He also includes reports of The Great Trek, the massacre of Piet Retief and his party by Dingaan, the fall of Piet Uys in an abortive invasion of the Zulu territories, the death of Maritz, and annihilation of the Natal Settlers, etc. Interesting map exhibits the relative positions of the emigrant farmers and the native tribes. Note that a former owner was Air Commodore Ian Malcolm Bonham-Carter, CB, OBE (1882 1953), senior officer in the Royal Air Force. The H. B. Carter above would probably be his father, Hugh. Fourth Edition. First edition published in Bombay (Mumbai). 3rd British edition after the 1st of 1839 and 2nd of 1841. Latter editions are preferred, since first did not include the hand-coloured lithographs.
