Hardback. Condition: Very Good. Charles Raymond Macauley (illustrator). First Edition. Harper, Vincent. The Mortgage on the Brain: Being the Confessions of the Late Ethelbert Croft, M.D. New York: Doubleday, Page & Company, 1905. First edition. (A U.K. issue, printed in the U.S., was issued that year by Hutchinson.) Octavo, pp. [1-14] [1-2] 3-293 [294: blank]. Original terra cotta cloth, front panel stamped in gold and white, spine panel stamped in white, pictorial paper onlay with illustration by Blendon Campbell affixed to front panel. Illustrated by Charles Raymond Macauley on four inserted plates. Faint damp staining to cloth on rear cover, inner hinges discreetly strengthened, a very good copy. #3460. $45. A novel of multiple-personality, set in contemporary London and narrated by a doctor specializing in what would now be termed psychiatric cases. The novel's motif is hinted at early on as the author develops his theme that the personality of which we are aware represents only a small and unstable part of our identity, holding only a kind of mortgage on our selves. In his preference of "brain" to "mind" or "soul", the author's materialism, which absolves people of moral responsibility, seems to anticipate some aspects of a more modern or even post-modern sensibility. The tone veers into the tendentious at times, but the story shows enough flashes of originality to earn a place in any comprehensive collection of multiple- or split-personality fantasies of this period. This book is an autobiographical account of the author's transformation from a respected medical doctor to a patient struggling with a profound mental disorder.
