Four separate publications all authored by Robert Hare with Philadelphia imprints between 184-1843. Paged as [frontis], i-xii, 1-370, [2], i-vi, 371-605, [1], i-xx, i-vii, [1], 1-56, 1-28, i-viii, 9-23, [1], [8] plus several unpaged b/w plates. Hardcover: H 24cm x L 14.75cm. Contemporary full leather binding; some scuffing to boards with wear at edges particularly corners; splitting along both front and rear joints causing some pliability to both boards; 1.75cm jagged chip at spine heel and 3.5cm loss at head with latter contributing to shallow losses across exposed quires' top corners; spine's black title label retains "Hare's | Chemistry" in reasonably bright gilt lettering. Toning/foxing throughout with some stains and soiling; creases to initial and rear leaves; front free endpaper has antiquarian ink inscription "D.D. Irwin | Vicksburg | Miss" along with his pencil signature and other notes; title page has two separate ink inscriptions "D.D. Irwin | Vicksburg | Miss" and "Philadelphia | Nov. 20th. 1843" (handwriting same as on ffep). Text block is still firm. Book concludes with eight pages of ads for J.G. Auner. Book's original owner appears to be Dr. David D. Irwin (1822-1853) who is interred in an extended family plot in Port Gibson, Mississippi, a prosperous planter town located thirty miles south of Vicksburg, the proximity of both towns perhaps allowing for a dual medical practice but online records are minimal.
