First Edition
Hardcover. 8vo. Blue cloth. vii, 243pp. Near fine. Handsome and tight first edition with an unusual feature: Front flyleaf bears the ownership signature of IRENE DOUGLAS, dated in her hand May Douglas was the widow of George Bruce Douglas (died 1923), co-founder of Quaker Oats; his brother Walter died on the "Titanic." "Brucemore," the Douglas mansion in Cedar Rapids, Iowa, was considered "the grandest house west of Chicago" in its day, and this handsome volume no doubt graced a shelf in its elegant library; today "Brucemore" operates as a historic home museum. In addition to the ownership signature, Irene Douglas pencils the following temperance pledge on a rear inner flyleaf: "Am determined to drink no more whiskey from June 29th 1936 to January 1937. This I do promise and swear to myself." A most unusual copy in superb condition.
