Binding is tight and square, hinges are sound - no cracking. CleanHapgood-decorated endpapers with inscription in which she quotes one of the characters in the book, and signature of author: "Never mind John! Let's forget, and begin all over again! - Susanna - Kate Douglas Wiggin." Pages and edges are clean and bright, with gilt top page edges. All pages have decorated borders. 225 pages. Theodore Brown Hapgood (1871 - 1938) was born in Somerville, Massachusetts and studied at The School of the Museum of Fine Arts in Boston. His work exemplified impeccable craftsmanship and found its way into book covers and jackets, monuments, vignettes and ecclesiastical vestments. John Uri Lloyd (1849 - 1936) was an American pharmacist and leader of the eclectic medicine movement who was influential in the development of pharmacognosy, ethnobotany, economic botany, and herbalism. He also wrote novels set in northern Kentucky. His most popular novel was the science fiction or allegorical Etidorhpa, or, the end of the earth: the strange history of a mysterious being and the account of a remarkable journey (1895), illustrated by J. Augustus Knapp. First distributed privately, it was later printed in eighteen editions. Translated into seven languages, it was widely read in Europe as well as the United States. Theodore Brown Hapgood (1871 - c. 1938) was a prominent Massachusetts illustrator, printmaker, sculptor and designer of the late nineteenth and early twentieth centuries, he studied at the Boston Museum of Fine Arts. During his career Hapgood worked extensively in the book arts, both illustrating fine books and designing book covers and ex-libris plates. Known for fine craftsmanship Hapgood's art first came to national attention in the American Art Nouveau period of the late 1890's. During this important era he was commissioned to design posters for The Inland Printer, The Century and Little, Brown and Company.
