With the essays "The War Trilogy" by Per B. Katz and "Avi Holtzman: The Loss of Aesthetic Innocence" by Peter Goin. Holtzman's spectacular work open the comprises most of the publication with a total of 21 photographs. As the work of some of the New Topographic photographers in America of the 70s, Holtzman's uninflected long look at the Israeli landscape tends to neutralize the mythic and high romantic connotations of "the holy land", forcing the viewer to confront the insidious power of politics over nature and history over beauty. It is a powerful, general condemnation of the war's consequences - the complete militarization of the land. Holtzman's camera, charting the geography of destruction, has captured a painful insight into how the very land itself has become a victim of war. The 53 photographs of "The War Trilogy" constitutes the most in-depth single artist representation in the Altered Landscape Collection, a premier repository for contemporary photographs on the environment. "We place Holtzman's work next to that of other photographers in the collection - the 'Bravo 20' photographs by [Richard] Misrach, the 'Nuclear Landscapes' of Peter Goin, and Lewis Baltz's deadpan coverage of the rural West's transformation into rootless suburbia - and it's clear that we need the view through all these different frames in order to understand where we live." - William L. Fox. I-6. ~ ~ NOTE: TOTAL REDUCTION SALE: THE PRICE OF THIS BOOK IS CURRENTLY REDUCED! ~ ~ (illustrator).…

Hardback. Condition: New. For much of the twentieth century, the prevalence of dictatorial regimes has left business, especially multinational firms, with a series of complex and for the most part unwelcome choices. This volume, which includes essays by noted American and European scholars such as Mira Wilkins, Gerald Feldman, Peter Hayes, and Wilfried Feldenkirchen, sets business activity in its political and social context and describes some of the strategic and tactical responses of firms investing from or into Europe to a myriad of opportunities and risks posed by host or home country authoritarian governments during the interwar period. Although principally a work of history, it puts into perspective some commercial dilemmas with which practitioners and business theorists must still unfortunately grapple.…

Hardback. Condition: Very Good. Birgit Lyngbye Pedersen was looking for the right sofa for a house from the fifties and discovered Finn Juhl (1912-1989), whose furniture is experiencing a renaissance in the wake of the retro wave. When Juhl's house in Charlottenlund, which he designed and decorated in 1941-42, came up for sale, Pedersen purchased the building and all of its furnishings, presenting it immediately afterward to the adjacent Ordrupgaard Museum. This monograph takes a look at Finn Juhl-alongside Hans J. Wegner and Arne Jacobsen one of the most important Danish Modernists-in an agreeably unpretentious way. Per H. Hansen, a renowned expert in Scandinavian furniture design, provides a humorous, extremely informative description of Juhl's unconventional character and classic furniture-the Chieftain Chair, the Pelican Chair, or the Poet Sofa. Drawings, original photographs, images of the newly curated house (2008), and an amusing final chapter about his patrons round off this unusual volume.…

Hardback. Condition: New. The European financial crisis of 1931 was a pivotal moment in the economic and financial history of the twentieth century. Based on extensive archival research and a cultural conceptual framework, There Will be the Devil To Pay offers a new and much needed understanding of the European financial crisis. It tells the dramatic story of the five months that led to the breakdown of the gold standard, writing the history of the crisis from the perspective of central bankers, private bankers, and government officials. It provides a new narrative of how those involved struggled to understand and respond to the crisis as it unfolded. Contributing to the emerging literature on radical uncertainty and narrative economics, this book provides a detailed analysis of how decision-makers confront uncertainty and shape narratives that create actionable knowledge and enable decision-making.…

Hardcover. Condition: Near Fine. 1st Edition. Text in English. 224 pp. Minor edge wear and few scuffs on the rear cover. Danske Bank was founded in 1871 as Den Danske Landmandsbank (The Danish Farmers' Bank) during a time of great economic, social and technological change and upheaval. With its tradition of cautious and conservative banking and credit policy, it has been part of all the major changes in society ever since. In 'Danske Bank - A History of the Bank since 1871', professor of business history Per H. Hansen tells the story of Danske Bank's development in close interaction with society, and how views of the bank have changed through the years, both in and outside the company. We follow the bank through more than 150 years of development and progress, and through two major crises where the bank deviated from its tradition of caution and the fundamental values on which it was built, and which have all made Danske Bank the bank it is today. The history of Danske Bank is the story of a changing world and the bank's efforts to continuously evolve and adapt along with society, while being true to its own tradition.…
