Daniel's Dream World MapA 1557 Wittenberg Edition of Luther s Writings - In a Contemporary Blindstamped Pigskin BindingA 1557 Wittenberg edition of Martin Luther's polemical works, printed by Hans Lufft. Bound in handsome contemporary blind-stamped pigskin over wooden boards, this volume features Luther's influential Heerpredigt wider den T rken (Army Sermon Against the Turks) and its accompanying woodcut world map, widely known as "Daniel's Dream."Assembled during a period of intense theological conflict, the book the "Second Part" of Luther's collected works, gathers his vital treatises and epistles against various sects and opponents, serving as a cornerstone of early Reformation literature.First composed in 1529 during the Siege of Vienna, the Heerpredigt was Luther s urgent response to the Ottoman threat, framing the invasion in apocalyptic terms. To visually underscore his eschatological interpretation of history, early editions of the work, along with his translation of the Book of Daniel, included a woodcut world map illustrating Daniel's vision of the four beasts. Printed by Hans Lufft, the celebrated publisher of the Luther Bible, this 1557 collected volume preserves the map within its original polemical context on leaf 459 verso, vividly combining cartography with religious and political propaganda. This 1557 volume is the third edition of the second volume of the first collected German edition of Martin Luther s works, issued in twelve volumes as the so-called Wittenberg Edition, begun during Luther s lifetime.Daniel's Dream MapThe highlight of the volume is the celebrated "Daniel's Dream Map" (cf. Shirley 65), which Lufft had introduced in 1529-1530. The map presents a crude, stylized depiction of the Old World (Europe, Asia, and Africa) serving less as a geographical tool than as a dramatic canvas for Protestant apocalypticism. Overlaid on the continents are the four monstrous beasts from the seventh chapter of the Book of Daniel, representing the succession of earthly empires: the winged lion of Babylon over Europe, the bear of Medo-Persia and the four-headed leopard of Greece occupying Asia and Africa, and the terrifying fourth beast with ten horns representing Rome. The map conforms to Shirley's Block 1, distinguished by the spelling "AFFRICA," with the label "EV | RO | PA" stacked in three lines to the left.A somewhat curious map of Europe, Africa, and Asia is to be found in apocalyptic literature originally emanating from Wittenberg in 1530, or even 1529 . One of the first impressions of the map was used by the printer Hans Lufft. The map itself is a crude woodcut showing the four beasts of Daniel's dream and the simplified continents of Europe, Africa and Asia - Shirley. Book.
