This book traces the origins of European noble titles to their primitive sources before the 5th century, using etymology to establish the primary import of titular honors. The author argues that the prevailing errors of heraldic and legal authors and lexicographical etymologists in regard to titles stem from a false dependence on conjectural etymology. The author contrasts Selden's flawed etymologies with his own etymological system which compares terms belonging to the same root in the cognate dialects. The author alleges that this etymological system shows that titles of nobility were originally signifiers of some circumstance in which the primitive bearers were placed in relation to the people or the state, and sometimes to themselves. The author maintains that titles were not expressive of the honor and respect paid to their bearers and that they were generally signifiers of some circumstance in which the primitive bearers were placed in relation to the people or the state, and sometimes to themselves. The author concludes that the study of Sanskrit, from which the author argues the bulk of European languages descend, has solved the problem of the wide domain of the Thracians, a simple people who were not Scythians but derived from Asia Minor.
