Add to basketHardcover. Condition: Very Good. Later American edition. 12mo. 15.5 cm x 9.5 cm. [5], 8-295, [7] pp. Lacks the half-title. Original endpapers bound in the rear. Recently rebacked red morocco over contemporary red morocco boards with a recent black morocco label lettered in gold on the spine; all edges marbled. Illustrated with a frontispiece portrait of Samuel Johnson. With a continuation of the European chronological table to (what was then) the present period, with a new and complete American chronology, containing an account of events from the first European arrival to North America up to events in 1818. Produced from the last English edition. Long's stereotype edition. Evans 44472. Not in Sabin. ODNB, Pat Rogers, "Johnson, Samuel". Evans records a miniature dictionary printed in Boston in 1810, and there are a few unrecorded, earlier American miniature dictionaries. Samuel Johnson's Dictionary was an indelible influence in English lexicography. After its publication, it was recognized as an authoritative guide to English vocabulary, replacing Nathan Bailey's dictionary. His dictionary captured all kinds of English words, from the crude to the sophisticated. Its importance in the history of understanding the English lexicon cannot be overstated. A charming copy of a landmark publication in the English language. A Very Good copy with the corners rubbed through; leaves show minor foxing and a few have a tiny burn mark to the fore-edge.…

Contact seller5-star seller16mo, pp. [4], 274, [1]; engraved portrait frontispiece of Johnson; occasional moderate staining, the last three leaves with chipped margins, the second to last with loss of text to the Chronological Table at the top outer corner, the last leaf with loss at both corners, but no loss of text; contemporary and likely original full calf neatly rebacked, old red morocco label preserved; front hinge reinforced and rear endpapers replaced; flaws aside, a good, sound copy. Bookplate of James Mead. Not the rarest of Johnson's dictionaries, but quite scarce in the marketplace. The last copy noted by BookHub was one offered by Goodspeed in 1939, and after cataloguing more than 300 Johnson dictionaries, this is the first copy we've catalogued. These miniature editions of Johnson's dictionary are not connected at all with Johnson 's text - first published in full in America in 1818 - but rather, for mercantile purposes, with his name.
