Recently rebacked red morocco over contemporary red morocco boards with a recent black morocco label lettered in gold on the spine; all edges decoratively marbled. Illustrated with a frontispiece portrait of Samuel Johnson. With a continuation of the European chronological table to (what was then) the present period, with a new and complete American chronology, containing an account of events from the first European arrival to North America up to events in 1818. Evans records a miniature dictionary printed in Boston in 1810, and there are a few unrecorded, earlier American miniature dictionaries. Samuel Johnson's Dictionary was an indelible influence in English lexicography. After its publication, it was recognized as an authoritative guide to English vocabulary, replacing Nathan Bailey's dictionary. His dictionary captured all kinds of English words, from the crude to the sophisticated. Its importance in the history of understanding the English lexicon cannot be overstated.
