Condition: new. ALL UK PARCELS SENT TRACKED! ALL OVERSEAS PARCELS SENT AIRMAIL, TRACKED! (S/hand, Paperback, 2011). 2011 1st edition. 4to paperback (170 x 240mm). Ppviii,151,ad. Colour photographs. Fine new copy. The barn owl is a 'flagship' species, at the top of the food chain, and its presence or absence is a good indicator of the health of the countryside. This is the enjoyable and informative story of the author's success in restoring this beautiful bird to areas of the country where its numbers had catastrophically declined. From an upbringing in the Lake District, the author developed a deep interest in natural history which became an all-consuming passion. As a 'licensed rehabilitation keeper', he cared for a wide range of injured and orphaned wildlife, giving individuals a second chance by returning them to the wild. He reveals how and why he later graduated to barn owl conservation. The author describes his many encounters with barn owls, from the acquisition of his first breeding pair; 'Barney', a completely humanised owl; to stories of the fascinating array of people involved in releasing, studying, and simply marvelling at this beautiful bird. Although there is a funny side to most situations, there are also the inevitable disasters and disappointments of conservation work, such as the accidental or deliberate sabotaging of releases or the killing of released birds. The reader shares in the author's disappointment and frustration at the sheer cost in time and money and his frequent self-doubt about the success of the whole exercise. However, there are descriptions of more enjoyable activities such as bird ringing, watching home-grown birds metamorphose from ugly pink scraps into creatures of ethereal beauty, and the seemingly limitless energy and enthusiasm of countless landowners and volunteers who are totally committed to the reintroduction of the barn owl. After almost 20 years, there is now evidence of a marked increase in barn owl numbers in areas where the author has worked. During this period, he bred and released around 250 birds, put up nest boxes and advised on barn owl-friendly approaches to land management. These activities helped to reverse the decline in population as areas were repopulated and also created reservoirs of wild breeding barn owls, whose offspring colonised other under-populated parts of the country. The return of the barn owl not only heralds a brighter future for the British countryside, but also shows, at a time of great public concern about the state of planet Earth, that the negative effects of human activity on the environment can be reversed with effort, goodwill and determination. .…

Hardcover. Condition: Fine. Dust Jacket Condition: Fine. 3rd Edition. xi+419 pages. Illustrations, maps. Original publisher's cloth, spine lettered gilt, with unclipped dust jacket. Edited with the assistance of Stan Beesley, John Harron and Doreen S. Lambert The wild plants of counties Down, Antrim and Londonderry have been the subject of continual observation and investigation since about 1690. Stewart & Corry's classic 'Flora of the north-east of Ireland, originally published in 1888, has so far passed through two editions which summarise these investigations. This completely rewritten third edition is the accumulated fruit of all those earlier recorders plus the work of botanists of the last fifty years. This book is the only up to date and comprehensive source of information on precisely which species of flowering plants, ferns conifers grown wild in the area. For each plant there is an account of its history, distribution, habitat preferences and an assessment of how common or rare it is in the three countries. It should prove an invaluable reference to all who are interested in the wild flora of Ireland and its conservation. *** WEIGHT OVER 1.4 KG, EXTRA SHIPPING CHARGE WILL BE REQUESTED FOR DELIVERIES OUTSIDE OF IRELAND *** A fine copy without any damage, library stamps, inscriptions or other markings.…

Taschenbuch. Condition: Neu. nach der Bestellung gedruckt Neuware - Printed after ordering - What if the price of being loved was the loss of everything you've ever known Elara Montgomery navigates a vibrant, chaotic world that no one else can see. To her, the city is a tangle of glowing red filaments-the 'Strings of Fate'-connecting souls to their predestined ends. But Elara is an anomaly. Her own wrist bears only a cauterized void, a severed connection that leaves her invisible to the universe's grand design. She is a woman living on borrowed time, her identity slowly leaking away into the gray mist of the 'Terminal Vision.'Her solitary life is upended when she encounters Julian Sterling. An architect of impossible structures, Julian is obsessed with the 'Labyrinth of Restoration,' a construction project where water flows upward and shadows fall toward the light. For the first time, Elara feels a warmth that requires no string-a resonance that defies the Weaver's laws. But Julian's devotion is haunted. He is surrounded by 'Echoes'-shimmering, translucent versions of Elara from past lives, jazz musicians and scientists alike, all lost to the same tragic fate.As their bond deepens, the cost of their union becomes clear. To build a 'Sunlight Bridge' that can sustain Elara's existence, Julian is draining the city's destiny, risking an 'Emotional Ice Age' that could turn humanity into feelingless puppets. Meanwhile, Gabriel Ross, the cold Agent of the Weaver, descends to 'prune' the glitch that Elara has become. With every step toward Julian, Elara loses a piece of herself. First, it is the memory of her mother's voice. Then, the name of her first love. Finally, her own name. She is becoming a 'Living Echo,' a vessel of multiple lifetimes merging into one. She must decide: Is a manufactured fate, woven from the gears of a machine city, better than a free but fading existence 'When Sunlight Bridges Our Broken Worlds' is a sophisticated exploration of the friction between destiny and desire. It blends high-concept metaphysical fantasy with a deeply intimate romance, challenging readers to ask if love is found in the history we share or the choices we make in the present moment. As the Clockwork Tower activates and the golden shears of the Weaver close in, Elara and Julian must prove that the architecture of the heart is stronger than the threads of fate. Even when the mind is a blank slate and the past is a hollow shell, some connections are written in a light that time cannot dim. Immerse yourself in a story where the end is only a new beginning, and where sunlight finally bridges the worlds we thought were broken forever.…
