No Jacket. 1st Edition. 1913, First edition, James MacLehose and Sons, Glasgow; xvii 299pp; frontispiece and 50 black & white illustrations on 45 pages, illustrations in text and 8 maps; sturdy blue cloth binding. Condition: Author's presentation inscription on front blank - " To the Institution of Mi…ning Engineers with the author's compliments. Oct. 25 1916". The book was placed in the Institution's library by a keen and cynical librarian who proceeded to put the library's stamp in the margin of each plate and map (except the portrait of the author's ancestor) also the title page and 10 times in the margin of text pages. The date stamp of 26 Oct 1916 appears on the half-title and the bottom of the title page. Bookplate to inside front cover. Endpapers have been replaced. Cover has very heavy sunning to spine, heavy wear and severe discolouration (see illustrations). However, the text block is tight, with occasional spotting and mark in margin but otherwise clean. Not smart but an interesting and serviceable copy.
