Quelques erreurs de numérotations sans manque. Manque le frontispice. Reliure frottée. Edition originale. Some pages misnumbered. Frontispiece is missing. Binding rubbed. First edition. Guy de La Brosse was Louis XIII's regular physician and founder of the Jardin du Roi (ancestor of the Jardin des Plantes). The last part, entitled "Dessein d'un Jardin Royal pour la culture des plantes médicinales", presents the project for the future Jardin des Plantes. While the author remains famous for having successfully completed this project, he is also known for having been one of the first French Paracelsians. This work, one of the first great French botanical treatises, detailing the medicinal virtues of plants, their classification and their therapeutic use, is very much inspired by Bacon and Paracelsus. The book illustrates in a very clear way one of the schools of thought of the nascent revolution, that of Paracelsianism. First edition. This very rare book is fundamental to the history of the Jardin des Plantes. Divided into six parts, the last of which has its own title page: "Plan for a Royal Garden for the Cultivation of Medicinal Plants in Paris, in which the reasons for its necessity are fully explained, and the benefits it may bring to the public." Guy de La Brosse, physician to Louis XIII, obtained permission from the king on July 6, 1626, to establish a medicinal herb garden in Paris for the cultivation of plants useful in medicine, to replace the one in Montpellier created by Henry IV. But this project took time to come to fruition, as the Paris Faculty of Medicine viewed it as a competitor to its activities, especially since La Brosse also wished to have botany and chemistry taught there. This garden, which would be named the King's Garden and would become the National Museum of Natural History in 1793, was not officially inaugurated until 1640. The final section includes La Brosse's various petitions: "To the King, to Cardinal Richelieu.," "Defensive Memorandum," "Plan for the Royal Garden," the Edict of 1626, and the letters appointing La Brosse as intendant of the garden, and finally a "Treatise on Useful Plants." "In addition to the historical interest attached to the reprinting of these documents, the book "De la nature, vertu et utilité des plantes" taken on its own, offers valuable insights into the otherwise obscure life of the founder of the Jardin des Plantes." Denise, Bibliographie du Jardin des Plantes 22. Beautiful engraved frontispiece at the beginning of the volume, featuring medallion portraits of Hippocrates, Dioscorides, Paracelsus, and Theophrastus. Complete with the three fold-out plates. Discreet restorations to the binding. Bookworm damage has been filled in at the lower corner on about twenty leaves. A fine copy. Provenance: A beautiful ex-libris engraved with a bonobo (?) by Ernest-Théodore Hamy (1842-1908), physician and anthropologist. He held the chair of anthropology at the National Museum of Natural History, founded the Trocadéro Museum of Ethnography, and co-founded the "Gallery of Paleontology and Comparative Anatomy" at the Jardin des Plantes. His library was auctioned in Paris in 1909. We can be certain that he read this book carefully; he is the author of "A Precursor to Guy de La Brosse: Jacques Gohory and the Lycium philosophal of Saint-Marceau-lès-Paris." -.
