Contact seller5-star sellerHardcover. Condition: Fine. One of 450 copies printed by the Castle Press. Original publisher's beige and brown patterned, paper-covered boards backed with beige cloth. Gilt lettering on spine. 6 3/4" x 10 1/4." Seventy pages, complete. Plates in black-and-white and color (only one in color), complete. Pages are virtually pristi…ne and intact except for light age toning. Covers are virtually pristine and intact except for slight browning and slight wear to extremities. A Fine copy. This book contains two autobiographical accounts by Francis Guillemard Simpkinson (1819-1906), midshipman aboard the HMS Sulphur, and Edward Belcher (1799-1877), captain of the HMS Sulphur. Edited by Richard A. Pierce and John H. Winslow. Belcher's account was taken from his two-volume Narrative of a Voyage Round the World (1843) and Simpkinson's account had been hitherto unpublished. The HMS Sulphur was originally commissioned by Captain F. W. Beechey to survey the Pacific Ocean for the purposes of exploration, scientific research, and establishing navigational routes for Britain. Beechey became ill on the expedition, so Belcher took his place as captain. Simpkinson's and Belcher's accounts document the Sulphur's journey in 1837 from about San Francisco to Monterey, California. Both Simpkinson, then only 18 years old at the time, and Belcher document day-to-day events along their journey in California. Their accounts also provide invaluable information about early San Francisco and Monterey and other historical events in early California history. Notably, the Sulphur expedition included the first exact navigational survey of the Sacramento River. The Sulphur came back to California in 1839 (this voyage is not documented herein). Simpkinson and Belcher went on to have successful naval careers. Back colophon: "Four hundred and fifty copies of this Publication Number 132 of The Book Club of California have been printed by Grant Dahlstrom at The Castle Press, Pasadena, California, October 1969.".
