Il concetto di tipo serve come strumento di comunicazione tra soggetti che altrimenti parlerebbe…ro lingue diverse: la villa, il grattacielo, la casa a corte indicano classi di elementi comprensibili a tutti. Nella ricerca scientifica, in quella artistica e nella progettazione spesso si considera un problema come se lo si fosse già incontrato, per cui si applicano procedimenti e si usano riferimenti basati su una serie di "similarità". L'uso di precedenti nella progettazione chiama in causa la questione della tipologia, per cui il termine "tipo", che descrive in termini generali una struttura formale, non è solo un mezzo di classificazione, conoscenza e comunicazione, ma è anche un vero e proprio strumento operativo per il progetto. Il concetto di tipo in architettura e il legame con la città: un tema che attraversa secoli e contesti, dalle riflessioni della trattatistica vitruviana e rinascimentale alle definizioni teoriche dei maestri italiani del Novecento. Questo volume indaga i molteplici significati assunti dal concetto di tipo e ne esplora l'applicazione concreta in alcuni fatti urbani di particolare rilievo. L'organizzazione dello spazio pubblico e privato viene analizzata lungo un percorso che attraversa la città storica, moderna e contemporanea, mettendo in luce le trasformazioni, le continuità e le innovazioni che ne hanno definito l'evoluzione. In questa quarta edizione, interamente rivista nei contenuti e arricchita da un nuovo apparato iconografico, l'attenzione si concentra sul rapporto tra la generalità del concetto di tipo e la particolarità di ogni progetto d'architettura.
