Paperback. Condition: New. Print on Demand. This book studies the Petrels of the Southern Hemisphere and is a definitive monograph of the subject. It delves into the history of the Petrels, tracing the evolution of their study from the first descriptions made by ornithologists who sailed with Captain Cook, through to the present day. The author has conducted a comprehensive review of all the literature on these birds, including many previously unpublished manuscripts and drawings. After more than 50 years, this landmark work brings an entirely new classification of the Petrels, describing their evolutionary relationships, and presents a thoroughly revised systematics for the group. It includes details of all valid species and subspecies, with full descriptions, synonyms, measurements, and extensive notes on their distribution, variation, habits, and breeding. The book is superbly illustrated with full-color plates of all the species and subspecies, and many black-and-white photographs. This will be the standard reference on the Petrels for many years to come and is an indispensable tool for anyone interested in these birds. This book is a reproduction of an important historical work, digitally reconstructed using state-of-the-art technology to preserve the original format. In rare cases, an imperfection in the original, such as a blemish or missing page, may be replicated in the book. print-on-demand item.…

The principal artist was Grönvold although the best plates are probably by Keulemans who contributed 163 to the first four volumes; Roland Green and Herbert Goodchild provided the parrot plates in volume VI. Born in Australia Mathews sailed for England with his new wife in 1902, there he visited the British Museum and "conceived the idea of producing an exhaustive work on Australian birds. He met R. Bowdler Sharpe, keeper of the bird collection, who encouraged him and 'taught him how to work'. Once started on the huge undertaking, Mathews became fanatical. Sixteen-hour days were spent in research, writing, skin and book-collecting: he bought, exchanged or obtained by hired collectors 30,000 skins and amassed some 5000 books covering every aspect of ornithology but, 'essentially a bibliophile', he 'was not really interested in the living bird'. Correspondence sped between Australia and experts all over the world. The first volume of "The Birds of Australia" was published in London in 1910. The twelfth and final volume appeared in 1927. His other publications covered lists of Australian, New Zealand, Lord Howe and Norfolk Island birds, numerous articles and, with Iredale, one volume of a "Manual of the Birds of Australia" (London, 1921). In 1912 he established the "Austral Avian Record", editing it throughout its fifteen years of existence" (Tess Kloot for ADNB). Mathews' own collection of birds forms part of the Rothschild Collections at Tring. Anker 328; Nissen IVB 605; Whittell pp.490-492; Wood p.454; Zimmer pp.419-421. The original parts collate as.…
