Questo libro è rivolto non solo agli studenti universitari, ma anche a tutti coloro che vogliono avvicinarsi agli spettacoli d'età romana liberi dal condizionamento di tanti luoghi comuni.…L'autore, che da molti anni studia le diverse forme di spettacolo in età romana, riunisce in questo volume una ventina di suoi scritti apparsi tra il 1984 ed il 2009: alle problematiche legate agli spettacoli anfiteatrali (duelli tra gladiatori e cacce alle belve) ha affiancato negli ultimi tempi ricerche specifiche anche sul mondo del teatro (con particolare riguardo alle varie figure di attori) e sulle interferenze esistenti tra forme diverse di spettacolo (in particolare tra quelle anfiteatrali e quelle circensi). I singoli contributi non sono stati tuttavia riprodotti così come apparvero nelle rispettive sedi. Per dare al volume una veste unitaria, sono stati uniformati i criteri di citazione, con il rinvio ad una bibliografia generale utile anche come repertorio di riferimento sull'argomento. È stata colta quest'occasione anche per eliminare eventuali refusi di stampa e per un sistematico aggiornamento bibliografico, sia pure limitato ai contributi principali. Sono infine state aggiunte le note a quei testi che in origine non le prevedevano, mentre testi inizialmente pubblicati separatamente sono stati fusi insieme per offrire una trattazione più organica del problema.
