Presumed first edition. ix, 298pp. and 6 of 8 black and white illustrations (the frontispiece and plate listed as facing page 217 are missing). Arthur Lee Knight (1852-1944) was a popular author of adventure books in the late 19th and early 20th century. At the age of 16, he became a midshipman on the frigate HMS Forte, serving in the East Indies station. After leaving the navy he began his writing career, which was influenced by the time he spent in the Royal Navy where he was engaged in suppressing the Arab slave trade in the Indian Ocean. In this story, the British cruiser Ariadne is on the East Indian station. Her mission: to intercept Arab slave dhows and free the African slaves that are being taken from East Africa to be sold on slave markets in the Middle East. On board the Ariadne is midshipman Everard Brooke. When they are in port in Muscat some disturbing intelligence reaches him. The ship's interpreter, Hassan, has heard that two dhows full of slaves are on their way to Arabia. There is also a rumour that the French are in secret negotiations with the sultan of Muscat. The book is bound in the original red cloth covered bevelled boards with gold titling and coloured illustrations on the spine and front board. The case of the book is in very good condition with shelf wear and some soiling to the boards and the spine is faded. There is a little damage to the cloth on the bottom front corner and the spine ends are bumped. The contents are tight and clean apart from a few marks from finger smudges, etc., and scattered foxing. The foxing is mostly light to moderate although a few pages are more heavily affected. The plate facing page 110 has been loose in the past and tipped-in again, and has some soiling and creasing with small nicks on the edges. The endpapers are browned with some foxing and the front endpapers have partially repaired splitting down the spine gutter. There is an inscription dated 1907 on the front free endpaper. J.
