Light stain on front board. 1923 Hard Cover. 102 pp. The Bodley Head Quartos series printed by Curwin Press. Facsimile of title page from original 1592 edition precedes text. Gabriel Harvey (c. 1552/3 ? 1631) was an English writer. Harvey was a notab…le scholar, whose reputation suffered from his quarrel with Thomas Nashe. Henry Morley, writing in the Fortnightly Review (March 1869), has argued that Harvey's Latin works demonstrate that he was distinguished by qualities very different from the pedantry and conceit usually associated with his name. In 1585 he received the degree of D.C.L. from the University of Oxford, and is found practising at the bar in London. Gabriel's brother, Richard Harvey, had taken part in the Martin Marprelate controversy, and had given offence to Robert Greene by contemptuous references to him and his fellow wits. Greene retorted by inserting a few lines in the first edition of his A Quip for an Upstart Courtier containing scathing remarks on the four Harvey brothers, drawing attention, among other things, to the fact that they were the sons of a ropemaker. In 1599 Archbishop Whitgift made a raid on contemporary satire in general, and among other books the tracts of Harvey and Nashe were destroyed, and it was forbidden to reprint them. Harvey spent the last years of his life in retirement in Saffron Walden, dying there on 7 February 1631.

Hardcover. Condition: Near Fine. Dust Jacket Condition: Near Fine. First Edition. Second printing of the true first edition - with the corrected state of text reading 'J. M. Barrie' instead of 'Sir John Barrie' on p.177, line 4. Dustwrapper designed by Michael Harvey. ***Near fine in forest-green cloth-covered boards with gilt t…itles to the spine. The gilt is still beautifully bright. Boards clean and unmarked. Head and tail of spine just slightly creased. Corners sharp. No reading lean to the binding. Spine tight. Page block edges nice and clean - the top edge sprayed mauve by the publisher to match the dustwrapper (now faded). Internally also near fine with no inscriptions. No foxing. Pages clean. No creases or tears. ***In a near fine colour-printed dustwrapper, which has not been corner price-clipped, retaining the original publisher's printed price of £1.80 net. The dustwrapper is complete with no discernible faults. No creases, chips or tears. No fading, even to the spine. Dustwrapper bright. ***203mm x 135mm. 216 pages. ***'Graham Greene writes: "An autobiography is only 'a sort of life' - it may contain less errors of fact than a biography, but it is of necessity even more selective: it begins later and it ends prematurely. If one cannot close a book of memories on the deathbed, any conclusion must be arbitrary, and I have preferred to finish this essay with the years of failure which followed the acceptance of my first novel. In another sense too a book like this can only b e ' a sort of life', for in the course of sixty-six years I have spent almost as much time with imaginary characters as with real men and women. There is a fashion today among many of my contemporaries to treat the events of their past with irony. It is a legitimate method of self-defence. 'Look how absurd I was when I was young' forestalls cruel criticism, but it falsifies history. We were not Eminent Georgians. Those emotions were real when we felt them. Why should we be more ashamed of them than of the indifference of old age? I have tried, however unsuccessfully, to live again the follies and sentimentalities and exaggerations of the distant time, and to feel them, as I felt them then, without irony.' (Quote taken from the front flap of the dustwrapper) ***Second printing of the true first edition, complete in its original dustwrapper, in very nice near fine condition. Not an uncommon book, but hard to find now in such nice condition. ***For all our books, postage is charged at cost, allowing for packaging: any shipping rates indicated on ABE are an average only: we will reduce the P & P charge where appropriate - please contact us for postal rates for heavier books and sets etc. Jacket design by Michael Harvey (illustrator).

Head and tail of spine slightly creased. Corners sharp. Slight abrasion to the fore-edge of the page block. Internally also near fine with no inscriptions. Pages clean. The dustwrapper is complete with no chips, tears or loss. There is some light creasing mainly at the top edge of the front panel. There is also a small light stain at the top of the front panel. Some light browning to the edges and spine of the dustwrapper. The red and brown lettering on the spine of the dustwrapper has also slightly faded, but less than is usually found with this title. ***205mm x 135mm. 339 pages. ***'In "The Human Factor" Graham Greene turns to the world of the Secret Service that he charted so brilliantly once before - a world peopled by lonely men cut off from the luxury of communication with their fellows. The secret service is usually the subject of a thriller. Graham Greene has made it the background of a perceptive and compassionate novel. For an officer of the service espionage can be only a part of life. Life is also the private relation to which he returns in the evening, the dangerous human factor of the title.'
