Product Description: The Romans invaded Britain on four occasions, twice under Julius Caesar in 55 and 54 BC, under Claudius in AD 43, and in AD 296 under Constantius Chlorus. Gerald Grainge looks at the challenges and how they were overcome, reconstructing the ships and examining weather patterns, tidal regimes, and coastline changes. This fresh account of events, based on a reassessment of the original sources and on recent historical research and archaeological evidence, is set in the context of the development of Scotland from prehistoric times to nationhood.

Softcover. Condition: Very Good+. Minor bump to base of spine. Light creasing to wraps top of spine.; British Archaeological Reports (B. A. R. ) British Series 332; 159 pages; Grainge's dissertation examines recent evidence from maritime archaeology, in the Mediterranean and off the coast of Britain, to reinterpret the events of… AD 43. Grainge's principal aims are to identify Roman bridgeheads on the British coastline, to examine the technology available to the Romans for seafaring and to assess the value of Romano-Celtic vessels. The study also considers more recent invasions for clues as to where the Roman force landed.

Soft cover. Condition: New. 1st Edition. VIII, 223 pages : 340cm. The adaptive re-use of English monastic buildings in the second half of the 16th century has been relatively little studied. With a few notable exceptions, it has been generally assumed that most former monastic sites were simply plundered for their building mater…ials. Two new approaches suggest that frequently this was not so. First, by examining in detail all the monastic houses of a single county - in this case Hertfordshire - which survived until the Dissolution, and, secondly, by treating the surviving architectural evidence as a primary source, it can be shown that much medieval fabric is, in fact, incorporated in later houses on monastic sites, even when this is not readily apparent. Coupled with contemporary documentary records and later antiquarian accounts, this structural analysis allows a reconstruction to be made of the processes of re-use in the half-century after the Dissolution. The author features 13 detailed case studies of important properties.

Taschenbuch. Condition: Neu. nach der Bestellung gedruckt Neuware - Printed after ordering - The academic consensus that the Roman invasion of Britain in AD 43 landed at Richborough, Kent, has been challenged in recent years. Proponents of the alternative hypothesis that it took place at or near Fishbourne, West Sussex, have cla…imed that this makes better sense of the account in the ancient sources. This volume asks what sense the Fishbourne hypothesis makes in terms of the options for the naval strategy of the crossing. After considering the respective archaeological and topographical contexts of the sites, the work discusses general logistical issues as well as the type of ships available to the invading forces and assesses the evidence for their performance. The study concludes by looking at the choices facing the Roman naval planners of AD 43.
