Enfin, indépendamment de tel ou tel mot, les "faits de prononciation et de grammaire" ne sont pas oubliés. L'ouvrage de Georges Gougenheim constitue ainsi, plus que le glossaire que révèlent ses index, une réflexion sur le monde de relations entre les formes de la langue française et leurs valeurs, leurs sens, leurs emplois "à travers l'histoire". Parmi les paroles et les écrits qui illustrent ces relations, où la sémantique s'incarne grâce à la grammaire, Gougenheim a privilégié la plus grande littérature, montrant ainsi que la leçon de Molière, Racine, La Fontaine, Voltaire, celle des oeuvres plus anciennes - du Moyen Age à Rabelais ou à Montaigne - n'est pas seulement la leçon du style, de la sensibilité et de la pensée, mais celle du grand contexte culturel qui donne du sens au passé, pour le temps présent.
