Taschenbuch. Condition: Neu. Neuware - On June 13, 1971, the New York Times published the first of the Pentagon Papers, a series of top-secret Defense Department documents exposing U.S. government policies on the unpopular war in Vietnam. James C. Goodale, then the young chief counsel for the Times, was there leading the legal team every step of the way. This is his compelling, never-before-told story of what happened behind closed doors -- the strategies, the decisions, the larger-than-life characters from the worlds of law, politics, journalism, and the military. Besides recounting the story behind the Pentagon Papers, Goodale notes Barack Obama has threatened to pursue Julian Assange and WikiLeaks, just as Nixon went after Neil Sheehan and the New York Times. Goodale warns that this threat, if effected, may criminalize newsgathering.

"The New York Times Company V. United States" features the briefs, oral arguments, trial transcripts, and judicial opinions from the historic 1971 U.S. Supreme Court case, commonly known as the "Pentagon Papers" case. It firmly established that the First Amendment prevents the federal government from utilizing prior restraint to censor the press, even in matters concerning wartime national security. Daniel Rezneck was the former senior assistant attorney general for the District of Columbia and fourth president of the D.C. Bar. Rezneck joined Arnold & Porter in 1964 and was partner for 27 years. Second Story Books is honored to offer this item from the personal collection of Neil and Susan Sheehan. Neil Sheehan (1936-2021) and Susan Sheehan (1937-2026) were a distinguished husband-and-wife team whose careers helped define American literary journalism in the second half of the twentieth century. Neil Sheehan, a Pulitzer Prize-winning reporter for The New York Times, is best known for his role in bringing the Pentagon Papers to public attention and for his landmark book "A Bright Shining Lie", while Susan Sheehan built a parallel reputation as a leading voice at The New Yorker, crafting deeply reported narrative nonfiction on subjects ranging from mental health to social institutions, earning her own Pulitzer Prize in 1983. Their longstanding ties to major publications, particularly The New Yorker, placed them at the center of an influential cultural and intellectual network, and the books from their library carry added provenance through this close connection to the magazine's editorial and artistic community. 1413549.
