Jahrhunderts und vom Autor mit freundlicher Ironie bedacht, sind auf ihre Art Außenseiter, die Tragikgrotesken erleiden und durchleben, ohne ihre menschliche Würde zu verlieren. »Mein gesamtes… Lebensschicksal ist geprägt von zwei Faktoren, die sich um das Bürgerrecht streiten: meiner dänischen Geburt und meinem jüdischen Blut«, schrieb Meïr Aron Goldschmidt 1877 in seinen »Lebenserinnerungen«. Immer streitbar und umstritten, häufig auf Reisen und umgetrieben, fand er seine eigentliche Ausdrucksmöglichkeit in der Literatur und stellte in seinen besten Prosawerken vor allem Probleme jüdischen Lebens in einer christlich-dänischen Umwelt dar.Im Mittelpunkt der Novelle »Maser« steht der bucklige Jude Simon Levi, dem als unerhörte Begebenheit eine unerwartete Erbschaft widerfährt. Sein Kampf mit sich und dem Herrgott um das Bezahlen des Armenzehnts wird mit Ironie und Sympathie geschildert und endet mit einer Aussöhnung der Religionen. Avrohmche Nachtigall, der kleine Abraham, wurde von einem starrsinnigen Vater um Jugend und Zukunftstraum gebracht, seine späte Liebe zu einem christlichen Mädchen gerät ähnlich unglücklich wie seine frühe zur Gesangskunst. Auch der Sonderling Mendel Hertz, ein dichtender Schuhmacher und Amateur-Philosoph, wird in der gleichnamigen Miniatur-Novelle von seiner Angebeteten abgewiesen. In »Levi und Ibald« taucht noch einmal der älter gewordene Simon Levi auf, zusammen mit dem windigen Poeten Ibald, wieder in einem tragikomischen Geschehen, in das der Autor die geistigen Strömungen und Auseinandersetzungen der Zeit einbezieht.
