Hardback. Condition: Very Good. First Edition. 1957. First edition. [xviii], 631pp., [i], a frontispiece and numerous other black and white illustrations, 7 coloured folding maps and 34 in-text maps. The Official History of New Zealand in the Second World War 1939-45 is a 48-volume series published by the War History Branch (and its successors) of the Department of Internal Affairs which covered New Zealand involvement in the Second World War. The series was published during the period 1949 to 1986. The 20th Battalion was raised, trained, and commanded by Colonel Howard Kippenberger; it came away from New Zealand with the First Echelon and went to Egypt, where it saw continuous active service from 1940 right through the war to the capture of Trieste in 1945. It took part in the campaign in Greece, and later in the disastrous battles to save the island of Crete. The book is bound in the original red cloth covered boards with gold titling on the spine. The case of the book is in very good condition with some shelf wear to the boards, light bumping to the bottom corners and slightly heavier bumping to the spine ends. The contents are tight and clean with a light finger mark on the fore edge of pages v, vii and ix. Two of the folding maps have creases from slight mis-folding. A presentation slip from the New Zealand Government to a Private Reilly of the 20th Bn/Armoured Regiment has been tipped in after the half title page. There is no inscription.
