Taschenbuch. Condition: Neu. Neuware - 'Heat' is a compelling exploration of cultural friction and psychological disintegration set in Manila during the early years of the American occupation of the Philippines. Written with a keen eye for atmospheric detail, the novel delves into the lives of American expatriates and military officers as they navigate a landscape that is both beautiful and oppressive. The story follows the experiences of individuals caught between their Western sensibilities and the complex, centuries-old traditions of the local Spanish-Filipino society.

Readers will find a nuanced portrayal of spouses navigating the challenges and intimacies inherent in their partnerships, uncovering the emotional landscapes that define their lives. Beyond the domestic sphere, the narrative casts a revealing light on the experiences of women in literature, particularly women novelists. It thoughtfully examines their aspirations, struggles, and contributions within the vibrant cultural milieu of the city. Adding an intriguing dimension, 'East of Eden' is recognized as a roman à clef, inviting contemplation on its subtle allusions to contemporary figures or events that shaped its creation. As a significant work of women's fiction, Glenn's 'East of Eden' resonates with enduring themes of love, ambition, and personal identity. Its insightful depiction of character and setting provides a window into timeless aspects of human experience, making it a compelling read for those interested in the complexities of relationships and the historical perspectives of women's lives in a dynamic urban environment. Hardcover. Condition: Very Good condition. No jacket. First Edition. New York: The Parade Publishing Company, 1926. Very Good condition. Bound in the original green cloth, which is still bright (without any of the usual fading). SEE PHOTOS. Sharp corners. Hinges are perfect. NO owner's name or bookplate. NO underlining. NO highlighting. NO margin notes. The fourth and apparently final issue of this short-lived magazine in book form. Hardcover. It was edited by Jamaican-born Walter Adolphe Roberts (1886-1962), who also contributed to this issue a short editorial, a play (THE QUEEN'S TENT, pp. 62-80), an article (AL SMITH FOR PRESIDENT), and a book review. This issue is filled with short stories, poetry, and essays. Of special interest is Adolphe de Castro's 17-page essay, AMBROSE BIERCE AS HE REALLY WAS, AN INTIMATE ACCOUNT OF HIS LIFE AND DEATH. Adolphe de Castro met Bierce in 1886, became his protà gà , and "wrote" a novella in collaboration with him. The article published here is the basis for the controversial explanation of Bierce's 1913 disappearance into revolution-torn Mexico. (de Castro claimed that Bierce had been shot by soldiers under orders from Pancho Villa). Other contributors to this issue are George Sterling (another Ambrose Bierce protà gà ), David Warren Ryder, Eleanor Ranos, Helene Mullins, Isa Glenn, H. M. Hamilton, S. Bert Cooksley, Lillian White Spencer, Louise Rice, Solita Solano, William Salisbury, Halpin O'Reilly Gilbert, Arthur Robson, Marcia Nardi, Eleanor de Nardi, Cary Ranck, Walter Haviland, Louis C. Fisher, Charles Divine, Robert Napier, Pauline de Silva, Eva Balfour, etc. First Edition. Hardcover. Very Good condition/No jacket. 8vo. 191pp.
