Ordinari segni del tempo con fioritu…re piuttosto leggere nella paginazione; nel complesso esemplare integro e ben conservato, godibile in ogni sua parte -- « Ad Assab una targa di bronzo ricorda: "Qui fu il deposito carbonifero acquistato da Giuseppe Sapeto il 15 novembre 1869, primo passo all'ampio volo della conquista coloniale italiana". Il Sapeto era stato in quei tempi frate nell'ordine dei Missionari Lazzaristi di San Vincenzo e, come tale, dal 1834 in poi, aveva visitato il Libano e l'Egitto; dopo di che coi fratelli d'Abbadie - celebri esploratori - era giunto in Abissinia per essere aggregato alla missione fondata da Monsignor de Jacobis. Così l'Africa Orientale divenne il suo campo d'azione. Nato nel 1811 a Carcare in quel di Genova, all'epoca in cui ebbero inizio i suoi viaggi egli era dunque un giovane ardente, animato da un senso ottimistico della vita che lo aiutava a sopportare tutte le scomodità e ad affrontare tutti i pericoli che l'esistenza e la Missione in paesi primitivi e spesso ostili portavano con sé. Nel 1860, il Sapeto svestì l'abito religioso che poco si confaceva col suo carattere e si diede all'insegnamento delle lingue orientali di cui era profondo conoscitore. L'acquisto della baia di Assab fu consigliato dal Sapeto, convinto assertore, e autorevole per la conoscenza che aveva dell'Africa Orientale in genere e delle coste del Mar Rosso in particolare, dell'opportunità della nostra presenza su quella che, con l'apertura del Canale di Suez, era destinata a diventare la grande strada delle Indie. All'acquisto di Assab seguì quello di Buia, dell'isola di Omn-el-Bachar e di altre isole e territori finitimi che, nel 1882, il Governo italiano riscattò dalla Società Rubattino e che costituirono la prima minuscola colonia italiana in quelle regioni. Il viaggio che il Sapeto, accompagnato da padre Giovanni Stella, compì tra i Mensa, i Bogos e gli Habab è del 1851. Il paese, com'ebbe a scrivere il Sapeto stesso, era "affatto nuovo, non ancor visitato da alcuno"; i due frati italiani furono quindi i primi esploratori di queste terre che dovevano più tardi divenire parte integrante della nostra Colonia Eritrea. La descrizione che di questo viaggio fa il Sapeto, col suo stile vivace e colorito, apparsa per la prima volta a Roma nel 1855, a quasi cent'anni di distanza, conserva ancora per noi tutto il suo interesse e costituisce, inoltre, una lettura piacevolissima. ».
