L'idée que l'homme ne trouve et n'invente pas deux fois la même chose est fausse, si on la prend avec trop de rigeur, et cet aphorisme trop facilement accepté a été cause de lourdes erreurs." (extrait de l'introduction de l'auteur) Après une introduction précisant les relations historiques entre l'Inde et l'Orient classique (Asie occidentale, Iran, Mésopotamie, Syrie, Grèce et empire romain) des temps reculés à la fin de l'empire sassanide, l'auteur conduit une étude détaillée des arts de l'Inde selon quatre grands axes : l'architecture, le bas-relief, la sculpture et les motifs ornementaux. Les nombreuses planches de l'ouvrage permettent la mise en perspectives des réalisations indiennes et de celles d'autres régions de l'Orient classique. L'auteur nous propose par exemple de comparer les chapiteaux de certains stambha indiens à la partie en 'pétales tombants' du chapiteau persépolitain, de nous demander si l'allure classique des drapés de la statuaire gandharienne ne serait pas une représentation indienne du vêtement que portaient alors les étrangers, ou encore d'interroger la corrélation entre la disparition du lion en Inde et la stylisation grandissante de sa représentation. Une partie importante du dernier chapitre est également consacré à l'art de la civilisation de l'Indus et des rapports que celle-ci entretint avec la Mésopotamie.
