En cuanto Gillain pone el pie en España, es engullido por la vorágine de la guerra moderna y por la maquinaria del credo político comunista, hasta el extremo de hacerse imposible el combate efectivo contra el ejército rebelde de Franco, mucho mejor organizado. La constatación de Gillain de que debe existir un divorcio entre los ideales políticos y las acciones militares, es apenas la punta del iceberg de la marea de emociones a la que debe enfrentarse en un sistema en desintegración.
