Maude Adams had the starring role and contributed much to the play's success. Barrie wrote the four-act play based on his 1891 novel. This play opened in 1897 with runs in Washington, D.C., New York, and London. On Broadway the drama starred the talented and good looking stage actress Maude Adams. The play was an enormous success running to 300 performances. Maude's role in this play established her as a Broadway star. The story takes place in the Scottish town of Thrums. Gavin Dishart, a new minister to the town, falls in love with a beautiful, spirited woman, Lady Babbie, who poses as an exotic Gypsy. Needless to say, complications arise (drama). Frontis. and a number of full-page drawings by C. Allen Gilbert, plus photographs of the play which appear for the first time in this edition. Scottish tartan cloth bookmark bound in. This book is in my inventory and the images are of this particular item. *** Beige hopsack cloth boards and spine. Front cover has stamped gilt floral decoration surrounding an oval photo portrait of Maude Adams, dark brown ruled lines and lettering. The spine has stamped gilt floral decoration and stamped gilt lettering. Deckle page edges side and bottom with top of block gilt. Covers have very light wear and soil with a few spots of light foxing. Contents are clean and complete in a solid binding. Hinge papers are cracked with hinges still strong. Book is a bit heavier than usual. *** 9.25 inches tall by6.5 inches.

Sir James Matthew Barrie, 1st Baronet, OM (1860 - 1937) was a Scottish novelist and playwright, best remembered as the creator of Peter Pan. This edition celebrates Maude Adams (1872 - 1953), who came into stage prominence starring as "Lady Babbie" in J. M. Barrie's, The Little Minister (1897). She continued her stardom leading roles in other Barrie hits: Quality Street, What Every Woman Knows, and she defined the role of Peter Pan on Broadway in 1905. Her splendid performances and beauty made Adams the most popular actress in America. C[harles] Allan Gilbert (1873 - 1929) was a prominent American illustrator. Gilbert illustrated a large number of books, among them Barrie's, Little Minister (1898); Ellen Glasgow's, Life and Gabriella (1916); H.G. Wells', The Soul of a Bishop (1917); and Edith Wharton's, The Age of Innocence (1920). Condition: A solid copy with clean and unfoxed illustrations; uniform age-toning to paper; moderate wear and some spotting to covers and portrait of Maud Adams.
