La Galerie Georges Petit portait le nom d'un des plus grands marchands d'art français de la fin du XIX siècle et du début du XXe. A la mort de Georges Petit (1856-1920), la galerie avait été rachetée en particulier par Etienne Bignou, associé aux frères Bernheim-jeune. La galerie fonctionna alors principalement comme une maison de ventes aux enchères, puis elle se mit à organiser des expositions rétrospectives, au début de la grande crise.
