Pub Year 1935, See images for condition. About the book >.>.> This collection, titled Hastings Wheler Family Letters 1704-1739, compiles the cor…respondence primarily between Lady Elizabeth Hastings, known as Lady Betty, and her half-sister, Lady Catherine Wheler, among others. Spanning from 1704 to 1739, the letters provide a window into the lives of these women, with insightful details regarding their social circles, family dynamics, and personal experiences. Lady Betty, a significant benefactor of Queen's College, Oxford, is a central figure, with her portrait by Kneller displayed in the College Hall. The letters initially focus on societal gossip and the friendships Lady Betty cultivated in London before she relocated to Ledston Hall in Yorkshire. There, she hosted her half-sisters?Anne, Frances, Catherine, and Margaret?except for Catherine, who was married at the time to the Revd. Granville Wheler, a pioneering figure in electrical experiments. The correspondence reflects the changes in Lady Betty's life as she adapted to her estate, inherited after her brother, George, the 8th Earl of Huntingdon, passed away. The family?s history unfolds through these letters, revealing complexities such as the disgrace of Lady Betty's stepmother at the court of Queen Anne, which prompted her half-sisters to stay with her permanently at Ledston. The epistolary exchanges illustrate the evolution of familial relationships and the impact of societal norms on their lives, creating a rich tapestry of 18th-century aristocratic society in England. Following Lady Betty's death, her estates passed to her half-brother and subsequently to his son, securing the legacy of the Hastings family.

Add to basketHardcover. Condition: Very Good. 1st Edition. First edition. Wheler's important account of his travels in Greece and the surrounding areas in the company of Jacob Spon from 1675 to 1676. One of the earliest travelogues by an Englishman in Greece. And though considered inferior to Spon's 1678 'Voyage d'Italie, de Dalmatie, de Grè…ce et du Levant', Wheler's work was notable for the accuracy of the map as well as his descriptions of the various sites, ruins, inscriptions, coins and plants he encountered; including an account of the Parthenon prior to 1687 siege of the Acropolis, where it sustained significant damage. Divided into six books: I. A Voyage from Venice to Constantinople; II. An Account of Constantinople and the Adjacent Places; III. A Voyage Through the Lesser Asia; IV. A Voyage from Zant Through Several Parts of Greece to Athens; V. An Account of Athens; VI. Several Journeys from Athens, into Attica, Corinth, Boeotia, etc. Complete with large fold out map and numerous engravings within the text plus three extra figures on one plate and 4 plates of coins to the rear. 4to. (300x210mm) [vii] 483pp. (with irregular pagination from book to book) Skillfully rebacked with contemporary spine and covers laid down. Raised bands and label to spine. Title fetching inscribed to fore-edge. Rubbing and wear to edges. Toning to pages, small closed tears to fold out map, not affecting image. Binding tight. A pleasing, study example. Very good.

The original French edition of one of the most important travel accounts in the Levant and the first description of Athens . Famous report of the voyage in Italy, Constantinople , Asia Minor , and Athens the noble English collector George Wheler in the years 1675 and 1676 along with the erudite doctor Lyons Jacob Spon did. This is one of the most important accounts of travels in the Levant, and the first description of Athens which was systematic, detailed, and trustworthy. as Laborde says, "la publication du voyage de Spon fut un evenement litteraire". Chateaubriand praised the work: "tout le monde connait le merite de cet ouvrage, ou l'art et l'antiquite sont traites avec une critique jusqu'alors ignoree". Spon and Wheler met in Italy in 1675; they travelled together with Francis Vernon to Zakynthos, where the two groups separated. Spon and Wheler continued by sea to Constantinople, and Vernon travelled overland. The great merit of Spon's work is due to its combination of a careful and knowledgeable interest in classical antiquity with an accurate observation of men, manners and topography in Modern Greece. The whole of volume II is devoted to Greece and includes a glossary of modern Greek words and phrases with instructions on pronunciation. Spon's interest in Greece was long standing. He had already published Babin's description of Athen's, which had been communicated to him by the Abbe Pecoil of Lyon, with his own notes and preface. Bibliographic references: Blackmer 1787; Weber 406; Laborde II, pp 1-27. #.

The engraved armorial bookplate of Walter Synnot Esq.r to the front paste-down, and the ex-libris of H. & W. Uellner above. If the Renaissance was the result of the "rediscovery" of Latin and later Ancient Greek texts by Western Europe beginning in the XIVc, then we must have a term for the "rediscovery" of the physical remains -- coins, architecture, inscriptions -- of antiquity; the "material Renaissance?" To hold in one's hand a coin with the likeness of Alexander the Great, or to run one's fingers over an inscription on the Acropolis is to travel momentarily to the ancient world. While earlier explorers such as Pierre Belon and Nicolas de Nicolay wrote of their travels in the mid-XVIc, Sir George Wheler (1651-1724) with his traveling companion Jacob Spon (1647-1685) were the first to write systematically about what they found in Greece. Wheler set out -- pushing the Grand Tour into Greece and Turkey -- with George Hickes, his tutor from Lincoln College, Oxford, in 1675. Wheler met Spon in Venice in June and the two continued east to Constantinople and Turkey before heading back west through Greece into 1676. Spon was the superior archaeologist, Wheler rather more dilettantish, with a particular interest in botany; his specimens were greatly valued by Robert Morison and his pupil John Ray. Returned to England, Wheler compiled his notes and drawings -- Spon published his own account in 1678 (in French) -- into the Journey into Greece, which for nearly a century served as the standard account in English of Greece and Asia Minor. Nothing escapes his ambit, whether the customs of modern people (including a very lively account of a wedding), the flora and fauna, ruins, inscriptions, coins, vases and so forth. Since Greece had been under Ottoman (or Venetian) rule for two centuries, Wheler -- unlike many of his successors -- treats Muslim monuments and customs with plain curiosity rather than with disdain as post-classical interventions. The second work of the Sammelband, a similarly historicized account of Geneva, is connected through Dr. Spon, who turned his attentions to the Calvinist stronghold. Sir Walter Synnot (1742-1821) was an Irish land-owner from Ballymoyer in Armagh. The bookplate of H. and W. Uellner with its motto "lego, ergo sum" (I read, therefore I am) has appeared in the trade in many volumes related to Greece. Üllner (or Vellner) is a family with a connection to Düsseldorf, but the identity of the owners -- presumably husband and wife -- is unclear. Greece: Blackmer 1786; ESTC R9388; Geneva: ESTC 12216.
