Gold gilt page ends which are bright. Front cover hinge is cracked and fragile. Moderate wear and bumping to corners, rear hinge spine ends and edges. Heavier wear on bottom edges. Inside front hinge is cracked. Marbled inside front and back covers. Previous owners name and date on ffep. Text is yellowed due to age. Otherwise clean and unmarked. The eight engravings on steel are clean and unmarked. Includes the memoirs of both poets. All of our books are individually inspected and described. Never ex-library unless explicitly described as such.

Three preliminary leaves, [v]-xvi, 312; xiv, 72 pp. Illustrated with eight steel engravings, including an engraved title page and portrait frontispiece. Finely bound by S. Houldsworth of 69 Cross Street, Manchester, in contemporary full brown morocco-grain leather, elaborately decorated in gilt to both boards and spine, with raised bands, gilt titling, all edges gilt, gilt turn-ins, and marbled endpapers. Binder's ticket to the front pastedown. An attractive Victorian devotional anthology bringing together the poetry of two prominent Anglican churchmen: George Herbert, author of The Temple, and Reginald Heber, bishop and hymn writer. The elaborate gilt binding gives the volume considerable decorative and presentation appeal. Early ownership inscription dated 1868 and a later inscription dated 1928 to the front endpaper. Contents generally clean and unmarked, with light, even toning. Binding remains sound. Leather rubbed and worn at the extremities, with some loss along the spine edges; early paper hinge repair visible internally. A very good-minus copy in a particularly handsome contemporary binding.
