From the publisher: "In this collection of firsthand accounts by those who knew Cesar Chavez best, a portrait of an uncommonly complex man, both driven and focused, yet humble, empathic and exceedingly principled, emerges. The reader gains an understanding of the yoke Chavez chose to place upon his own shoulders, as well as the ideals he employed to accomplish for the migrant farmworkers what many predicted would be impossible. The more than 45 contributors range from the famous -- Edward James Olmos, Henry Cisneros, Martin Sheen, Coretta Scott King, Jerry Brown and others -- to members of the Chavez family, to UFW staff, to the farmworkers themselves. Illustrated by the compelling black and white photographs of George Elfie Ballis, who began photographing the farmworker movement in the 1950s.". INSCRIBED / SIGNED by 5 people. Contact seller5-star seller145p. + [12p] of photos, staplebound booklet, 8.5x11 inches, first edition, mild handling wear, otherwise very good. Also included are five pieces of related ephemera: - 8.5x11 inch handbill from San Andreas High School in Larkspur announcing a production of Valdez's play "La Quinta Temporada" in 1972, along with a single dogeared page of typescript dramaturgical notes on the difficulties of adapting the play to this context; - A stapled Xeroxed copy of the "La Quinta Temporada" script with a title page for use in a 1993 UC Berkeley "Ethnic Theatre" class taught by Jean Bazemore with Davis as a guest lecturer; - A neatly creased stapled program from a production of "Corridos" by Valdez in 1983 at the Marines Memorial Theatre, San Francisco; - And a copy of "The Grapes: Communist Wrath in Delano" by Gary Allen, a 1966 right-wing diatribe with Valdez described as "co-starring" with Cesar Chavez in the grape strike. All materials from the library of R. G. Davis of the San Francisco Mime Troupe, with his annotations in pen. "Actos" is a collection of plays performed in the migrant farmer camps, and this group of documents reflects Davis' engagement with this practice in developing his own guerrilla theater.…
