The destruction and disruption caused by t…hese events started to be addressed by the construction of embankments along the river throughout the 19th Century; however, the embankments were not a long-term or complete solution to the flooding. The author provides meteorological and hydrological data over many years, and uses this to demonstrate that the floods could not be controlled by embankments alone. This book details a sophisticated engineering project that was embarked on to control flooding caused by the frequent inundation of the River Wien that has historically caused severe damage to structures and property in Vienna and its suburbs. The destruction and disruption caused by these events started to be addressed by the construction of embankments along the river throughout the 19th Century; however, the embankments were not a long-term or complete solution to the flooding. The author provides specific accounts of meteorological events which led to flooding, including one of the most severe floods that occurred in 1851. The book discusses the changing physical geography of Vienna and its suburbs over centuries, and the impact of human development on the river's behavior. It also argues for a more radical approach to flood control, through the combination of massive reservoirs to store floodwater in the surrounding hills, and the construction of an underground canal to divert floodwater away from populated areas.
