Limited to 1250 copies designed by Bruce Rogers (Warde 159) and printed by William Edwin Rudge. Lacking the slipcase. Front hinge cracked, else a very good copy. First edition reprinted along with an English version, with an introduction and typographical note by Eddy. The typography is by the notable American book designer Bruce Rogers (1870-1957), who "was appreciated in his lifetime. In addition to several honorary degrees, in 1948 he was awarded a gold medal from the American Academy of Arts and Letters for distinction in the graphic arts. Over decades of accomplishment in which he designed approximately 500 books. Rogers literally defined the profession of book designing in the United States" (ANB). Francis Meynell stated that Rogers was."the greatest artificer of the book who ever lived" cloth-backed boards, paper spine label.
Hardcover. Condition: Very Good. Dust Jacket Condition: None Issued. Henry Cabot Lodge's copy, with his bookplate on the front pastedown. Compliments of George Simpson Eddy card laid in at the front. Nice little book in slipcase. Text is unmarked; pages are bright, though the page edges are age toned. Many of the pages have been left uncut. Binding is tight and square. Covers show a little wear around the corners and the head of the spine is bumped. The slipcase is worn and starting to split at some of the edges.

Voltaire, avendo compreso che l'unico mezzo per imporre la pace è la guerra («l'unica pace perpetua è la tolleranza», scrisse in un suo libro sull'argomento), diffidava del profluvio di progetti di pace perpetua che invase l'Europa dei Lumi. Non di questo del povero, forzato n. 1336 della Galera di Tolone, al quale, dopo averne letto il progetto, inviò in carcere un biglietto lusinghiero: a sollievo della condizione di recluso dell'autore, ma anche perché gli scritti sulla pace perpetua di Gargaz contengono idee acute e, a rivederle oggi, del tutto moderne. Dei due progetti di pace perpetua di Gargaz qui pubblicati, il primo fu stampato da Benjamin Franklin attorno al 1782, il secondo nel 1797, entrambi Parigi. Dei progetti di pace perpetua che invasero l'Europa nel secolo dei Lumi, quello di Gargaz è, certamente, degno di essere ricordato per le idee acute e moderne. A cura di Daniele Archibugi.
