Résumé : En cinq décennies, le système éducatif français a beaucoup évolué, et parfois fortement progressé, mais de façon irrégulière ; il s'est nettement massifié et "démographisé", voire démocratisé durant certaines périodes. Mais il stagn…e depuis 1995, tandis que beaucoup d'autres pays modernes poursuivent leur progression. Comparativement, il régresse donc. D'aucuns diront que le système éducatif français a échoué ; or, il n'est responsable ni du manque de logements ou de l'absence de mixité sociale, ni de la précarité ou du chômage. Sa réussite n'a été cependant que trop partielle et trop inégale, et est encore moins évidente aujourd'hui qu'hier : il "peut mieux faire" et "doit mieux faire". Deux objectifs paraissent majeurs : Lutter contre l'exclusion sociale, principale source de l'exclusion scolaire. Vaincre l'échec scolaire et l'illettrisme, éviter les sorties sans formation ou sans diplôme et multiplier les offres de seconde chance et de "droit au retour". Accroître les chances d'accès aux enseignements supérieurs pour les porter au meilleur niveau international ; égaliser les moyens attribués aux divers secteurs et développer les enseignements universitaires en les professionnalisant. Leur atteinte suppose que se conjugent une volonté politique et une volonté pédagogique fortes, soutenues et pérennes. À propos de l'auteur : Gabriel Langouët, sociologue, est professeur émérite à la Faculté des sciences humaines et sociales (Paris V - Sorbonne) et chercheur associé au Centre d'étude et de recherche sur les liens sociaux (CNRS). Il est notamment, parmi d'autres, l'auteur de deux ouvrages Suffit-il d'innover? (PUF, 1985) et La démocratisation de l'enseignement aujourd'hui (ESF, 1994); il a aussi, plus récemment, dirigé Public ou privé? Élèves, parents, enseignants (Fabert, 2002) et Les oubliés de l'école (Hachette, 2003).
