The project was comprehensive, helping to define the glacial stratigraphic framework for use in future geological, engineering, and environmental studies in east-central Illinois. A key finding was that buried bedrock valleys affected the thickness and distribution of the glacial deposits. The site exhibits aquifers within 60 feet of the ground surface, which were formed by sand and gravel deposits found in association with buried bedrock valleys. These valleys were likely formed during a pre-Illinoian glaciation and then filled during the Illinoian glacial period. The book also includes new data from semiquantitative mineralogical analysis, particle-size analyses, and the coefficient of uniformity, and offers insights into the environmental conditions of the study site during its various depositional periods. Hardcover. Condition: Very Good. This is a custom-bound copy of "Extracts from the Voyages of DAVID PIETERSZEN DE VRIES, Master of Artillery in the service of the United Provinces, &c." Translated from a Dutch Manuscript in the Philadelphia Library by Dr. G. Troost. The pamphlet itself is undated, though the year "1841" is handwritten on the front cover. The pamphlet consists of 38 pages and is housed within cardboard-type covers. "From N.Y. Hist. Soc. collection" is handwritten on the front cover. The pamphlet begins with a title page, followed by pages 245-280. "Exploration of New York Harbor and the Hudson" is handwritten on the front cover. This de Vries extract appears to have been removed from the "Collections of the New-York Historical Society" Second Series, Volume I from 1841. From the "Introductory Note": "Among the early founders of colonies on the banks of the Hudson was David Pieterszen de Vries, the author of the work from which the following extracts have been made, containing descriptions of his voyages to different parts of the world. The following translation, being the production of a gentleman whose mother tongue was not the English, is not altogether such in point of style as could be desired, but its general accuracy may be relied upon. As the work has never before appeared in an English dress, the novelty of its details, and their intimate connexion with the affairs of the Dutch colony, cannot fail to recommend it to the favour of all who take an interest in our early history." Condition: The pamphlet has been placed into custom cardboard-type covers with tape along the inner edges at the front and back holding the pages in place. A facsimile of the title page has been affixed to the front cover. Both covers and all pages are securely in place. The pages have mild foxing; three pages were found with minimal pencil markings.
