Add to basketSoft cover. Condition: VG. Light gauge paper, pictorial printed wraps, sized about 11 x 15 1/2 inches, profusely illustrated including an abundance of advertisements. Overall a clean, bright copy with light toning around edges. Contributors include Clifford Howard (A Balanced Confession, complete), L. G. Moberly (Christina, chapters VI - VII), Henry Gardner Hunting (The Patent Envelope, complete), Ellen Leys (The Wiles Of A Woman, Chapters XVI - XVIII), Bushrod C. Washington, Jr. (Cupid Krag - Jorgensen, complete), and St. George Rathborne (Carried By Storm, chapters XVI - XVII). From 1869 - 1942, over 70 years, Augusta, Maine was America's mail - order magazine publishing capital with some seventeen titles published there and circulation at its height reaching an estimated three million copies. Magazines were mailed to subscribers nation - wide, and the sheer volume of sales led to the opening of a new post office in January, 1890. The major publications targeted women, particularly women in rural areas, but some also included articles and stories of interest to men and children. Farm and literary magazines were other types published in Augusta. The primary focus for the majority of the magazines was family and home life, and content included down - home advice on family life, decorating, business (raising chickens, for example), personal care, health, fashion, and the latest trends. Reading material included poetry, romantic fiction, short stories, and editorials, but most prominently the magazines offered opportunity (and encouragement) for women to buy the various and sundry items advertised. Contests and competitions were part of the allure, and subscription rates were very cheap (and often not even collected) as the magazines were supported well by the advertisements. The major publishers, E. C. Allen, P. O. Vickery and John F. Hill (who later became Governor of Maine), and William H. Gannett all became very wealthy. Publications included Good Stories, Happy Hours, Hearth and Home, American Woman, Needlecraft, and Farm World, all by Vickery - Hill Publishing Company, Comfort, by Gannett, which was the most successful of the magazines, Fireside Magazine, Peoples Illustrated Journal, the Illustrated Family Herald, Thrifty Farmer, Farming World, National Farmer, Golden Moments, Sunshine, Daughters Of America, and Practical Housekeeper, all by Allen, and later Gannett who took over Allen's publications in 1891. Some of the magazines including the present number were oversized, newpaper - style, and printed in quadruple columns, on cheap paper that did not hold up over time and use, thus, copies are relatively scarce, especially the early issues. Worldcat / OCLC locates only 5 repositories. See Zuckerman, A History Of Popular Women's Magazines In The United States, 1792 - 1995. …

Fourteen pages of World War ll military personnel with information particulars divided into columns with headings such as Name; Station; Home; Leave; Date of Rank; Revert to Inactive Status dates; and more. Looking over the many names among these pages. it occurs to us that a great deal of genealogical research might be done by a hobbyist or other interested party, particularly as concerns Women in the Military. On page 10, for example, is a 2D LT Mary Virginia Fletcher of Castlewood, VA, who was for a time at Ft. Bragg. Searching the Library of Virginia's online Virginia Chronicle, we located in the Lebanon News, Volume 115, Number 6593, 22 November 1995, a short biographical / autobiographical entry concerning the Lieutenant and some of her reminiscences of service. The paper used for printing this item has become somewhat limp over the decades, but it is safely stored now in a clear protective display sleeve with white card stock backing board.…

From the dust jacket: "On September 26, 1986, with the swearing in of William H. Rehnquist as chief justice, a new conservative epoch in the Supreme Court's history was ushered in. In the years that have followed, the Rehnquist Court--particularly with the retirement of leading liberals William Brennan and Thurgood Marshall--has completed a relentless transformation into the most conservative Supreme Court in the last half century. 'Los Angeles Times' reporter David G. Savage, who has covered the Court since Rehnquist's appointment as Chief Justice, deftly mixes the internal squabbles and public displays of the nine justices with the consequences of the Court's often surprising decisions Written with the kind of trenchant insight and behind-the-scenes anecdotes only an insider could provide" This book is inscribed to Diane [Spatz, Washington D.C.-based Assignment Editor for the Los Angeles Times]. In 1992 Ms. Spatz appeared on C-Span to discuss the progress of the presidential transition, Bill Clinton's meeting with the first President Bush and with Congressional leadership, and legislative priorities of the new administration. Contact seller5-star sellerHardcover. Condition: Poor. No Jacket. 1st Edition. POOR CONDITION. Presumed first edition (not stated but per OCLC citations). [frontis], 1-202 pages. Hardcover: H 17.5cm x L 11.75cm. Contemporary reddish-brown cloth; black decoration and gilt lettering to front board; rubbing/staining to boards with wear along edges particularly at corners; spine's surface cloth perished with underlying paper back-strip exposed and quires visible at ends all contributing to front and rear joints being compromised. Dark top margin stains to early leaves; varied soiling and stains to interior leaves. Front board and initial leaves inclusive to frontispiece are shaken as is rear hinge; two interior quires slightly pulled. Needs to be re-backed at a minimum and sold as is. Book now presented in a trimmed clear Dura-Lar (polyester film) sheet forming a dj which aids in securing boards and modestly enhances shelf presence. Scarce biography of Reverend Constantine Blackmon Sanders, aka The Sleeping Preacher, who was ordained as a minister in 1862 and resided for most of his life in Madison County and Jackson County, Alabama save for a few years in the 1880s-1890s when he lived in Red River County, Texas. Upon being stricken with typhoid fever in 1854 at the age of 23, Sanders started experiencing involuntary trances, i.e. sleeping spells, during which a secondary personality named X+Y=Z would emerge offering startlingly accurate psychic predictions. In 1876 Sanders asked Reverend George Washington Mitchell, pastor of Cumberland Presbyterian Church in Athens, Alabama, to document his mysterious "sleeping" clairvoyance and, accordingly, Reverend Mitchell found some sixty-nine living witnesses mostly from north Alabama and south Tennessee whose comments were compiled for this book. OCLC does not record any earlier editions than this 1876 W.C. Smith imprint but does note a second 1876 edition apparently distinguished by having both Roman and Arabic pagination (although with same page count overall) whereas this copy has Arabic pagination only. W.C. Smith published a third edition (also 202 pages total) in 1877 but the book was not reprinted again until 1981.…
